It looks like 2004 is the year the rules were made to be broken.

Canegrl04,

That would be a difficult record but it is within reach. Hopefully, the record for landfalling major hurricanes (3) won't be challenged.

"cuba/hispanolia/haiti could weaken the storm considerably....also there is a chance of a trough saving the us altogether."

Gosh. Wonder what will save them? Nice to be seen as a US blocker...
Sorry, but this sort of thing just really angers me a lot, though I really do know it wasn't meant in the spirit of what I'm implying. THERE ARE PEOPLE THERE.

We're not talking about people, we're talking about geography. It's not meant to be insensitive, and I don't get the impression that anybody on these boards is unfeeling toward the plight of others. We're looking at the dynamic features that will affect the hurricane's direction. But that doesn't mean we don't care that people live on those geographic features. ;)

Kinda like Frances with anticipated "landfall" in Florida....ya wanna tell the residents of the Bahamas that landfall didn't happen till the system hit Florida....they just spent 30 hours under the storm....but "landfall" hadn't occured till Frances hit the US.

the smaller the cane the stronger statement isn't true, along with the larger eye stuff. Isabel as a cat 5 anyone? Her eye was like the eye of the storm in the day after tomorrow. It was like the size of all NYC at its peak.
If this isn't rapid intensification, I don't know what is. Pressure is down 39 mb since then(estimated).
The sickest part is the drop between 1100 and 1400-he went from 980 to 960 mb in 3 hours  seems to have levelled off for now-was 950 at 1700 and is 948 now (2000).

My personal benchmark is Opal in 1995-she went from Cat 1 to almost Cat 5 in about 12 or 18 hours if I remember right.

If you live in the U.S., it is quite understandable that your focus would be on the time of U.S. landfall. If you lived in Puerto Rico, you would be looking first to the time of a Puerto Rico landfall. It's perfectly understandable. Why is it so necessary to demonize something that is such a normal characteristic?

Think the focus on final landfall (meaning a large continental landmass) has much more to do with the fact that the storm will be ending soon afterwards than that human lives are more important on continents than on the islands. That said, I also get aggravated sometimes with the US focus of some storm discussions. In this case there are a lot of areas that will be affected by Ivan long before we here in FL will, IF we will. I wish those folks the best...

Someone is going to have to bear the worst of this storm. I can only pray that Ivan weakens as fast as it bombs. I take that back, I can also pray that Florida doesn't have to endure another storm this season. :(
