Frances fills 40 percent of one N.O. hotel

People fleeing from Hurricane Frances brought an unusual Labor Day weekend sellout to at least one of the hotels participating in a quickly arranged discount for evacuees.

Manager Sherry Weber of the Best Western Avalon says about 30 rooms went to people from Florida, 30 to Mississippi residents and ten to people from Alabama.

Pharoah DeMeyers, who was at the front desk, says most were families.

They're paying $50 a night, one-third less than the usual $89. The hotel was among 16 which agreed to reduce their rates and waive their usual no-pets policy for hurricane evacuees.

State Rep. Austin Badon says they offered about 200 rooms in all. He says the hotels agreed to take pets because many people would rather face a hurricane than abandon their pets to one.

At the Best Western Avalon, only a few families brought pets. DeMeyers says two brought a small dog each, and one brought some hermit crabs.

BTW, my other half is in management with the company that owns this hotel...it is the official hotel for Six Flags in New Orleans East and is easily reached from the eastern approach to the city without having to come into the city for evacuees. Nice to hear....

So many others have helped Louisiana in its times of disaster. I'm really proud that Louisiana has stepped up to the plate - proud to be a Louisianian. :D
