Ivan Has An Issue

#1 Postby Sean in New Orleans » Mon Sep 06, 2004 10:22 pm

Carl Arredondo reported that one thing that is temporarily inhibiting Ivan from strengthening is that the system still has some Saharan air in it from Africa and that this dry air will eventually leave the system, but, that presently the system does still have some dry air in it from Africa. Also pointed out that this system bears very close watching for those along the Gulf of Mexico as it looks like this will be a Gulf system. At this point, once it enters the Gulf, it's "anybody's guess," as to where it will go....

Same report from met. Rob Perillo in Lafayette. Stated that it could be a player.

Not surprising, IMO--it came off of the coast of Africa fairly strong and swirling.

This is after the 11:00 advisory. The local mets in New Orleans do get the latest from the NHC about 2 minutes each evening before going on air. Actually, this report of Saharan air, according to Arredondo was in the latest report from flights into the system.

Lafayette met. Rob Perillo's final thought of his forecast tonight was "quiet for now."

It is in the supplemental vortex data message, but not in so much words. Did he go through the message itself and showed it by plotting the data (not to the TV audience, but with a computer), or did he just copy NHC's conclusion (which is okay since NHC is official)?

I'm sure he spoke, personally, with individuals from the NHC, if not those on the plane itself. Arredondo wouldn't quote that without knowing--he is a top met, who came to New Orleans from TWC. He knows all of these guys as buddies at the NHC. He attends conferences with them all of the time. I know someone who works on his staff.

That was what caused the weakening *last night* through this afternoon.

It doesn't look like any saharan air remains, judging by the the sat loops.
