1987 Olds Ciera. My car is a piece of $#*@ but it gets me where I need to go. The brand new radiator and the stereo is worth more than the car! (Radiator was just installed a couple of weeks ago, and the stereo was just installed over the summer) The car is worth less than $500...we put over $700 worth of repairs during 2002.

Lordy I know that feeling..
Mine is a 1984 Plymouth Reliant. Mileage is low (82,000)-- but today I paid $465 for a new fuel pump, distributor, and a carburator. I guess I shouldn't complain...it was the first repair job needed since 1997 ($340 worth so it would pass the emissions test...but it's passed easily every year since, so they did it right).

Good thing I had an extended warranty on it. Fuel Pump went out on it after 52,000 miles...

Speaking of cars with high mileage, here's the flip side......I sold my 80 Honda Civic in 1992, with 90,000 miles on it. Very low miles!!!! And an 8 track player to boot went with it......we had so many calls from that one ad my husband ended up changing our answering machine message to "the car is sold". We asked $500 for it and could have easily asked $900 or more! I put 8,000 or less on per year (stay at home mom). Prior to that my drive to work was only 8 miles one way too. We still laugh at all the attention that car got - one owner, low miles, good shape. Jim has said we should have kept it. It didn't even have A/C!!!! And originally I paid only $5,000 for it. Times have changed.... This wasn't the Civic that got me thru the 77/78 winters (obviously!) but it was very dependable. I inherited his Jetta (more family orientated) so I didn't miss it that much. Did not miss that 8 track player!!!!

I drive a 1990 Oldsmobile 98. It's a good car, still in pretty decent shape really. Has quite a few miles on it, though, about 157,000, but it gets me to where I need to go. We did extensive work on it a few years back and it's paying off, haven't had much trouble with it since (knocks on wood).

I can relate. When I said the reason I bought something brand new this time was because I was tired of so many problems with my used cars, I was talking about my 1990 Olds Ciera and my 1990 Olds Cutlass. Like you, I think we spent more on repairs than the car is even worth.
However, until a few years ago, I had a 1988 Honda Accord that had very few repairs. And then when it did, the repair shop literally STOLE IT!!! Now that's a very long story....(we sued them, won the case, but didn't get the car!!) Ya think something's wrong with our courts??? :x

My other car (well the wife's actually) is a 98 Lexus ES 300. We got a deal on this. Traded in our 2000 Honda CRV (worse car I've ever owned) for the Lexus. 85k on the L but you would never know it. We lowered our payments, and put ourselves into the best car I've ever driven.

Most Honda's hold their value...NOT the CRV.
