Wow...my parents (and most of the rest of my family) is in Asheville. Mom said that you all had gotten a lot of rain, but didn't mention ANYTHING this bad. We're praying for you all up there. I hope I have a hometown to visit when we come up in October!

There comes a time when we ordinary people cannot endure these threats daily. Two hurricanes in 3 weeks, recovery and now 5 days later a potential major hurricae again. I have lived in Florida 51 of my 55 years. I cannot ever remember preparing for 1 storm every 4 years and experiencing one every 10-15 years. The math gets scary when we are talking about prepare and experience 3 storms in 4 weeks. The brain and body begins to yell enough. I see it written all over my employees. Some who have moved here from Northern locales tell he they are considering moving. They are no joking. In fact, smiles are hard to find now. BUT if Ivan is coming our way, then it is prepare agian. Somehow it will quit, and I hope I will endure.

I've been exposed to Camille, Betsy, Donna, Charley, Frances and others in my 62 years, and I can't remember anything like it either.

What really worries me is that we'll either see total panic or total apathy. Either way, people will be hurt whether this hurricane hits Florida or not. Already, my neighborhood looks like a war zone...will it become one? I'm a 'lurker', a transplant from FLHurricane, currently down and other forums, have been for years, but I've never even heard of 4 tropical storms or worse (much less major storms) hitting one state, hell, even one country in a year.

I'm betting apathy and resignation. I hear it from people already.

NO fllood watch in southern WV but all family is there. Pretty worried have had a wet year there. I'm sure will have some damage if it lasts much longer there.

I am an assistant for a Clinical Psychologist and the local news just did a short with him on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and just plain anxiety and worry that we are all experiencing. The feelings run from hyperviligance to denial that the next one (Ivan) aint coming. The best psychological advice is to keep talking to those who understand what you are going through. Someone who won't make your experience or resulting feelings small. Just keep talking and we will all get through this.

Someone posted that we will forget what the details really felt like. Like giving childbirth, we are lucky we can forget. Problem right now..... we are giving birth to triplets and not getting a break between contractions.

well said. last night as i watched the nhc tracks shift toward the fla west coast in disbelief my wife laughed that my eyes looked crazed . this just seems so surreal. i went to walmart yesterday and the shelves were bare of batteries, lanterns, bread, etc. and most of the gas stations don't have any gas. this is a huge disaster shaping up and i really wonder how many people will be, or can be, prepared enough for a cat 4 hurricane at this point.

talking to people that understand is important. This is often hard when you are hit by a cat2 or flash flooding or something where the damage is very spotty. I know with Georges the worst damages were in a small area in southeast Jackson county and along a couple of the beaches in Jackson county. But for people outside these areas power was back in a day or so and structural damage was little. In the days after the storm it wasnt out of the ordinary to the "it wasnt that bad" kinda stuff from people that lived in those areas. Sort of makes you feel like, "oh, well, the damage to my house was just no big"

not only do they have them up at nhc over at fiu i hear an interview on radio yesterday and all personal are leaving them up at homes. i would say in fort lauderdale 80% of the shutters are still up.

Based on an interview with someone in Grenada last night via cell phone, she said that very few trees are still standing, very few if any houses still
have roofs on them and people got trapped in their own homes as their houses collapsed during the hurricane. I was told that the islands is completely
flatened. There are people still missing. The city is in complete ruins and the whole island has suffered catastrophic destruction. They said that they
will need all the help that they can possibly get. Tens of thoudands of persons have been made homeless by this hurricane which is already described as the worst the country has ever witnessed even without any damage assessments carried out as yet. There are no communication networks available except maybe cells phone service in certain areas. All the radio stations are off air because their buildings suffered severe to complete damage. The island has been turned upside-down. All of the Caribbean Islands
including St. Lucia has been through a destructive hurricane or a deadly volcanic eruption in the past and we have all been able to pick up the pieces and start our lives all over again so together we will stand and offer all the to assistance our neighbouring islands need so that they can
put their nations back in order where it belongs. I would like to tell anyone in the path of or within 200miles of the path of this dangerous
hurricane, especially Jamaicans, to take this system VERY seriously.

as predicted by NHC. These guys inside of 72 hours are nothing short of fantastic. obviousely there are differences beyond that within the ranks of nhc but really no surprise considering the complexity.

what you're discussing reminds me of how we were in nyc in the weeks after 9/11. everybody was out of their minds. some powered thru their ptsd... others could not. then the anthrax scares came and it got worse.. people walking around the city with masks on, etc. by then, the general consensus was "what's next.. bring it on". i can't imagine being in central florida without power/water/food for the past two weeks and relying on local radio for info about ivan. i'm hoping it goes nowhere near them.

They must not have very strong buildings there... a Cat 3 shouldn't flatten a city.
