Question for Central Floridians on the board..?

#1 Postby Josephine96 » Wed Sep 08, 2004 2:12 pm

Which news station did the best coverage of Frances.. in your opinion..

Channel 2.. Channel 9 Channel 6 or Fox 35..

I kept flipping between 9 and Fox..

I do like how Channel 6 had a "Talk to Tom" segment which allowed you to phone in questions to Tom Sorrells.. but I think Channel 9 still did the best job..

I stayed in the same hotel as the Channel 6 news team and met Nancy Alverez several times during the storm. That brave little person was out on the barrier islands as the storm passed through and she did the ONLY reports from there that I could find. For weather news, I'd flip to 9, cause Tom Terry rules!

I'm in Lakeland and the only Orlando TV we get on our cable is 9. Although there are some good Tampa mets, I was glued to Tom Terry. Awesome job. Level-headed, professional, knowledgeable with a good staff and equipment.

And when my daugther decided to drive back to her home near UCF on Monday, I watched Tom T's reporting on the tornado outbreak and called my daughter on her cell phone to have her pull of I-4 until the storm cells moved on north and east.

Channel 9, Tom Terry

#8 Postby otowntiger » Wed Sep 08, 2004 2:31 pm

Tom Terry and the channel 9 all the way. But I do like Glenn Richards on Fox, he, like Terry are very knowledgeable, and offer great insight. Tom Terry sometimes over dramatizes a bit. Tom Sorrels comes across as arrogant and obnoxious. He really thinks he's something. When Tom Terry was calling for an Orlando hit from Charley, Sorrels was still saying it would be well to our west and downplaying it all the way. And forget about poor, old (and I mean old) Dave Marsh. He is old school. He still talks to the viewers like they have no knowledge whatsoever and will never offer any interesting insight. He doesn't want to go "over our heads"

I'll admit.. At Fox.. I actually like Jim Van Fleet more than I like Glenn Richards.. Glenn kept thinking Frances was gonna turn..

Sorrells is a good met.. except he also sometimes can be a little arrogant..

I did like the "Talk to Tom" segment that Local 6 had though

My thoughts:
Channel 2 is way behind in the weather game in Orlando. At least on hurricane coverage. Dave Marsh offers little if any in depth information.

I thought that Tom Terry (9) did an awesome job with Charley. He was simply the best that night.
I thought Channel 6 and Sorrels with the way he clapped his hands and showed an "attitude" was poor. 6 may have had good coverage but I couldn't get past sorrels.

Now comes Frances.
Tom Terry did another fine job although at times, it is evident that he thinks a lot of himself, even putting his information above that of the NHC.
I think he's in love with the tornado tracker a bit too much and sometimes I thought he just over did it.
I gained some respect for 6 and sorrels this time around. He came down to Earth a bit in his attitude and did a good job of sharing information with us.

So 9 still rules followed by 6 and then you have 2 which is behind 35.
Poor channel 2. Time for some new blood? Perhaps.

I hate admitting I even have a television that gets Fox, but local Fox news (I don't have cable) was the best coverage of the network stations.

Tom Terry Fan here!! The guy knows his stuff.. When he talks I listen. He did think the famous "north" turn MAYBE going to happen before landfall and go a lil further up the coast then where it did, but I did as well for a few moments.. He had Charley DEAD on the whole way.. Cudos to him. I plan on writing him an email very soon to send him kudos and to invite him here..

All I know is nbc-2.com is what we non-central Floridians were able to watch during Charley and cbs4.com during Frances.

Live streaming video on the net rocks!

Tom Terry's coverage was outstanding.
His team of software guys were coding the models live!
I think that's what may have given Tom some of the self-confidence we all could see.
They were coding it just as fast as the NHC (et al) but had the nerve to lay their findings out faster..nervy.
I think it took guts for the WFTV management to put the kind of cash resources into the technology they've been using.
I'd love to see some hard data on how their models actually verified.
