exterior 3/16 plywood largo, fl

#1 Postby melhow » Wed Sep 08, 2004 4:29 pm

Hey All,

Does anyone on the board who lives near Largo, Fl have an idea where we can find 3/16 exterior grade plywood???

So far the 4 home depots and 4 lowes I've called are totally out of all exterior plywood...

I have been told by Lowe's lubmer that OSB (partical board) is just as good....

Any advice???

First of all, if you're going to do plywood, you want 5/16 not 3/16. And anyone who told you particle board is any use at all is completely full of cr*p.

EDIT: oops ... just noticed I wrote 5/16 here ... I meant 5/8. Half inch is the minimum I would consider.

OSB is fine if it stays DRY

Once wet, OSB will begin to lose some of its strength, as it is a composite of glue and wood.

Better than nothing, for what its worth.

Well, 1/2 inch is a big step up anyway. How are you planning to fasten them?

osb is diff than particle....i have a lowe's cust. service (as of 30 years) across the street from me and he swears by it....says 1)just as strong 2)will expand when wet but will not lose strength like particle board 3)larger chunks of wood plus epoxy still equals great strength vs. sawdust (i.e. particle board) mixed with glue which disentigrates when wet--almost

i have 7/16 OSB myself!!! and so does he...still in the yard never used from floyd....and he plans on using it with several bay windows included on his house

1/2" is what you see the most of in home depot, lowes for boarding up. 5/8" or better is what is recommended.

Perfect. Much, much better than screwing into the wall.

Use minimum of 1/2" (7/16). Anything thinner than that isn't acceptable as opening protection.

IMO everyone on the coast in hurricane areas should have boards anyway (and/or shutters)...but it is an investment...i just bought mine this year as it seems it would be a pretty active one...although storing them is a diff. story!!

ok...one last question, then it's purchase time....

Lowes recommeded "PlyLock (sp) Clips) instead of slider bolts for ease-of-use....

Any advice???
