Attention All Members - Please Read

#1 Postby southerngale » Tue Sep 07, 2004 5:53 pm

We promote an environment here where everyone should feel comfortable asking questions. That is not always the case lately. There are too many people calling others people I disagree with for asking questions pertaining to their area. Of course they're more concerned about landfall in their area...that's just common sense. I think we all agree that obvious trolls should be dealt with, but not by the members. PM a moderator or an admin about the post in question and let us deal with it. We will not have our members hesitant in making comments and asking questions for fear of being jumped on. That may be the way it is at other message boards but not this one. We try but it's impossible for us to read every post so you can help us out by reporting anything of question.
Thanks! Now let's keep this an enjoyable place for everyone to learn and discuss the tropics!

Thanks SG...excellent reminder. Everyone here is a little tired...seems like we havent had a break in the last 45 days. The inmates are getting restless...but we should still be nice.

Most of us that post here are interested in meteorology/tropical meteorology. We are excited in different ways if and when a tropical cyclone affects our area.

I strongly believe there is a difference between -removed- and wanting to experience interesting weather. Of course, hurricanes are violent storms and cause problems for us all, especially if we live near the coast and/or lose electricity. But even still, there is something about experiencing such storms and discuss it with everyone here.

My Apologies to the Board

#5 Postby Downdraft » Tue Sep 07, 2004 7:05 pm

I should have read this sticky before I said something in a thread of my own. Had I read it first I would not have made the comments I did. It was not my intention to offend but rather to call notice. You are on top of it and I know you will continue to be. Stay safe!

Great post Kelly!

When you read someone's post, perhaps it is best to step back and consider if the poster is just making an uninformed comment or they are really asking a question. I know that with all of the posts that we've seen, it's easy to skim through them and perhaps not get the total gist of the comment before we fire off a nice "rebuttal" . Also, take into consideration how you may view your comment if it was aimed at you.

In case you do not know who the moderators of this message board are they are in no particular order-
BreinLa, Cycloneye, LindaLoo, Southerngale, Stormsfury, vbhoutex, Gulfbreezer, Amanzi, Coriolis, Stephanie, bfez1, streetsoldier, azsnowman and Rainband.

Always contact one of us or an Adminstrator-Chad or Marshall- if you have a problem with another member you can not deal with personally with them by email or pm. When you see an obvious troll posting, please do two things-IGNORE THEM-ALERT A MOD OR ADMIN-and we will deal with them as quickly as we can.

As has been stated we do everything in our power to keep this a sane and controlled environment where EVERYONE SHOULD FEEL COMFORTABLE POSTING, but with over 3000 members and literally hundreds posting in several different forums we are not going to catch everything.

Thanks for your understanding and your help.

Flaming and trolls.

:?:

Would someone explain to me what the term "flaming" means as well as "trolls"? Read a lot of posts tonight on this board about both. Haven't done that much communicating on such a board; have done more chat; what do the 2 terms mean?

Faming is insulting another member.

A troll is
An Internet "troll" is a person who delights in sowing discord on the Internet. He (and it is usually he) tries to start arguments and upset people.

Trolls see Internet communications services as convenient venues for their bizarre game. For some reason, they don't "get" that they are hurting real people. To them, other Internet users are not quite human but are a kind of digital abstraction. As a result, they feel no sorrow whatsoever for the pain they inflict. Indeed, the greater the suffering they cause, the greater their 'achievement' (as they see it). At the moment, the relative anonymity of the net allows trolls to flourish.

Trolls are utterly impervious to criticism (constructive or otherwise). You cannot negotiate with them; you cannot cause them to feel shame or compassion; you cannot reason with them. They cannot be made to feel remorse. For some reason, trolls do not feel they are bound by the rules of courtesy or social responsibility.

Perhaps this sounds inconceivable. You may think, "Surely there is something I can write that will change them." But a true troll can not be changed by mere words.
Excellent post Kelly

Explain the terms flaming and a troll.

Thanks for explaining that; I appreciate it. On another matter; when do you think those of us; like myself; who live along the coastline of the GOM will get a better idea on where Ivan is going? By Sunday; September 12th?

Suspensions are now being handed out to those that insist on causing discord.

Many people who "live" online..myself being one of them..get their weather information from online sources such as storm2k. We disperse information thru this board, the chat room, and via internet radio broadcasts. We have no room here for people I disagree with, trolls, or others who get their jollies from posting forecasts made without any scientific basis(such as models). Nor do we have room here for you so called "experts" that attack our forecasters here with your groundless mindless garbage. With a major hurricane possibly threatening Florida now..after 2 hits already this year(not counting Bonnie here) many of our staff..especially those residing in FL, are VERY stressed out and understandably so. Dont add to their stress by turning this board or the chat room into a troll fest.

kudos to the moderators and regulars for keeping this forum from collapsing into something more typical of the internet these days. sure there are some flareups every few hours, but this board has been moving at warp speed since mid august and i can only guess the number of hits since then has been astronomical! let's just hope the mad rush of visitors doesn't bring the whole thing down as we move into the weekend as it has in the past.
