This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Is there such a thing as a CAT 6?

Once again, pardon my ignorance of hurricanes BUT.....is there such a thing as a CAT 6 hurricane? And if so....is Ivan the Terrible heading that way? I mean......HOLY COW, "210 MPH at 350'?"

I think they should have a cat 6. A cane blowing 190mph is infinitely more dangerous than one at 156.

Well it kind of hits a point in exponential damage that it doesn't make a difference. Its like falling out of a plane, after you reach a certain speed it doesn't matter how fast you're going when you hit the ground.

NO, There is not...thankfully. I was in Camille http://www.geocities.com/hurricanene/hu ... amille.htm and I can assure you that you don't need a Cat 6. Camille was OFFICIALLY 190mph but the wind speed exceeded 230 at Keesler AFB when the tower blew down and the measuring instruments were destroyed.

Excellent site ricreig! (http://www.geocities.com/hurricanene/hurricanecamille.htm) Could have spent most of the morning there if I wasn't supposed to be working.

Richard,
That was really interesting. Can you imagine that now with all the casino's. I have heard about Camile for years. Everyone in Mobile still talks about it as they felt the effects also.

After 155 mph it doesn't make a difference.. everything in it's path is going to be gone.

for some reason our WX fathers before us liked the 5 step program! Cat 1-5 in canes and F 1-5 in tornadoes....AN F-5 tornado's winds can well exceed anything a cat 5 has to offer   ...BUT ALOT smaller windfield

Yes and no. An F-5 certainly has stronger winds, but it last only seconds. A hurricane's winds last hours. So although the winds speeds may be less severe, the constant pounding can have the same effect. And then there's the size issue...

If it wasn't for the *people* there, I'd vote to let Ivn have a take at the Casinos :) Biloxi was a 'graft' town, but relatively sleepy when I was there. Now I'm not sure I'd want to go back there, Ivan or not.....But, Camille *DID* change that area permanently, didn't it? :)

No. If there ever was a Cat 6 though, it was Camille or the 1935 Keys Hurricane, both of which were in the 190-200 mph sustained winds.
