I don't know. It is still heading west-northwest. While it still probably will recurve towards the north, I think it will happen down the road. Maybe Florida panhandle. I just really hope Florida misses this one.....

The awful, horrible truth about Hurricane Ivan

#2229 Postby soonertwister » Thu Sep 09, 2004 12:28 pm

When you see Ivan in a satellite image, it is an abstraction of the true nature of the beast. Up close and personal, Ivan is about as dangerous as a hurricane can get. If the current track projection holds true, about this time tomorrow the greatest disaster in Jamaican history will be about to unfold.

We can hope and pray that is doesn't happen that way, but I don't think God makes divine interventions in the tracks of hurricanes.

If Ivan makes a direct strike on Jamaica tomorrow at current or projected intensity, all of the following and more will become the terrible reality of this hurricane:

- Hundreds, if not thousands dead from the direct impact of the storm
- Dozens, if not hundreds more dead in the aftermath, from hazards ranging from falling trees or debris to automobile crashes to clashes between citizens and armed bands of roaming looters
- Total loss of power for an extended time on much of the island of Jamaica, accompanied with minimal and sporadic telephone contact on the island and to and from the island
- A critical lack of food and water and other essentials, including medicines and medical care
- No safety for one's self and possessions for an extended time
- All trees and signs, most homes destroyed near the core of the storm
- Hundreds of thousands homeless
- Tourism industry virtually destroyed in the short term

This is the true possible cost of a great hurricane, and I dread the days to come for all of those who may be in harm's way.

North would be much better. South would put them in the northern eyewall.

I just saw a loop Ivan on TWC and it doesn't look like Jamaica will be spared. To my myopic eyes, it looks like they are going to get slammed by Ivan. I pray for those people living Jamaica and anyone else in the path of Ivan.

Dangerous Ivan heading for Florida

#2239 Postby Vortex » Thu Sep 09, 2004 12:33 pm

After an extensive review of all globals Ivan is behaving very well. Looking forward the deepening trough over the GOM will protect the GOM. Florida is likely to experience a cat 3 or 4 and the highest probaility based on the overall synoptic set-up over the next 3-5 days is south florida. Whether thats Miami or Naples it's much to early to speculate but the overall pattern is not complicated however the devil is in the details. Having said that look for Ivan to approach southern florida Sunday night/Monday...
