In this water vapor image you can really get a good idea of how much the mountains of western Hispaniola tear up a hurricane.

Freaky. In that image, Ivan's eye appears to have a damn pupil. Like a heavy-lidded lizard looking just past you. Eek.

B-Bear......How's it going what are your thoughts on track....I've been quite busy so not chiming in lately...I'll start getting vocal though

I had mentioned in another thread the other day that the Dominican Rep. has the highest peak in the carribean...Pico Duarte...It is over 10,000 feet and in the winter months temps easily can fall below freezing and snow has been reported at the top before. It is amazing how quickly you can go from the tropics to almost the alps in no time(lol)

I think that the latest NHC track makes sense, but I'm not buying that the storm will weaken from a cat 5 to a cat 3 in the Gulf. The only thing that I can see that would cause this would be wind shear, and I don't see where that shear is going to be coming from. According to Derek Ortt, the NHC is forecasting the shear based upon faulty GFS data. Big surprise. If that's indeed the case I truly hope the NHC figures that out and adjusts its forecast, because a lot of people in Florida will decide to stay rather than evacuate if they think it's only going to be a cat 3 storm.
