Yes... I am most definitely praying for the people of Jamaica.

No.

If it hits Central FL... it has a better chance of re-emerging over water and re-strengthening like Charley. Hitting the Panhandle, it could easily keep going north and miss the Carolinas all together.

Let's pray it misses Jamaica and then by some miracle weakens before another landfall. When you hear about people dying because of these storms, it really makes you stop and think. :(

They're beautiful to watch but cause so much misery for some...

I agree with Southerngale & Canelaw99. Derek, your statement about your confidence in your forecast and your intention not to make preparations surprised and troubled me.

1) this isn't a storm to play games with
2) you didn't give any reasons why you are so confident to help people assess the quality of your forecast.

I appreciate your posts, but please be careful in what you write. You are one of the more influential post-ers here, thus you have an added responsibility not to lead people astray or cause them to ignore the official NHC warnings, forecasts, etc.

Here's the big difference between Tracy and Ivan. Tracy is the smallest tropical cyclone on record. The entire storm was only 60 miles wide (amazing). Wind gusts reached 135 mph.

Ivan may put Tracy to shame.

One of the big problems in Jamaica is that they have gone through a lot of hurricanes, but in general they've been more the garden variety category 1-2 storms. I don't think Jamaica has ever been hit by a cat-5 in modern times, and the worst recent storm was Gilbert.

This is no Gilbert. The latest track has the core of the hurricane going directly over Kingston, where roughly 1/3-1/4 the entire population of Jamaica lives. Many many of those persons live in shacks and shanties, many on the steep hillsides outside of central Kingston. Those hillsides are at grave risk of major mudslides in many places where significant populations live, and the housing of the typical Jamaican will not survive a category 4-5 storm. There are roughly 120 rivers that bring rainwater down from the mountains at elevations of up to 7400 feet. Jamaica is mostly hilly and mountainous terrain.

It is so different than if a strong cane goes over a sandy coral atoll, like what would be found in the Bahamas. As long as the island has enough height to avoid storm surge inundation, and sturdy housing is the norm rather than the exception, human catastrophe never occurs, although structural damage can be major. Sandy low-lying islands don't have major flooding problems outside of surge except minor building flooding. In Jamaica entire hillsides can come down with the trees and houses, and the people living in them.

If this thing goes right over Kingston, I guarantee you that it will be the worst hurricane disaster in the West Indies in many years.

If I were living anywhere in Florida, I would be making my hurricane preparations. It doesn't matter if you live in the panhandle, the Keys, South FL or NE FL, make your preparations. Ivan means business at this point.

the reasoning is in the forecast discussion and the reasons we give. The second I see anything even remotely indicate a shift to the right, you'd better believe that I am going to be preparing very much for the storm then, probably even evacuating at least to atlanta. I see zero currently that leads me to believe that is going to be the result

If they hit the center. The AF plane obtained a reading a couple millibars lower about an hour later. I noticed a discussion a day or two ago that the NHC lowered the pressure estimate because the dropsonde didn't hit the exact center of the storm.

Unfortunately none of us here are magicians that can pull rabits out of a hat. lol. The best thing to do right now is to keep your preparations in order and keep watching Ivan as it approaches Florida.

135 is before those images occurred, I believe. the equipment was destroyed, as was everything else in that terrible category five cyclone. This may be like tracy, only with a much wider damage path

You know very well that if Avila is still at the desk it WILL shift east to follow the GFS more closely. I suspect Avila would be looking for an excuse. With it's shift west that makes it closer to current official track, and justifies a second look by those that lean toward the GFS.

The admins have asked us nicely not to post images anymore. You might want to think about posting that as a link since it is so large.
