That's not an uncommon thing in powerful hurricanes. A new, larger eyewall forms around the existing eye. Over time, it contracts, squeezing the inner eye until it collapses. This is generally accompanied by a weakening of the storm. After a brief period, the new larger eye clears out and intensification resumes.

This is what you will see referred to as an "ERC" or "eyewall replacement cycle."

Imagine if a hurricane were ablel to form 2 eyes instead of one. Then it would look like a face were moving across the Atlantic. lol!

Actually if one is ready to replace the old one,,,, not as much weakening as there would be with one collapsing and the other one forming, then taking over.

didn't TWC mention that this was what seemed to happen with frances the ERC? she did not seem to intensify (i think this was over the bahamas this happened) but rather stalled...i don't think that was because of the ERC...just wondering if Frances encountered the same

While it might not happen in a full blown Hurricane, it did happen in a tropical Storm off the Texas coast about thirty years ago. A disorganized system formed a new stronger center of circulation, but for a while, it had two different eyes and circulation centers.
