Major evacuation problem.....

logistical problem --- All the folks coming up to the mainland from the Keys --- where will they go? They'll be coming into areas already devastated by Charley and Frances. A nightmare in the making!

Yup...that's one of the questions that people are asking. I guess they just have to keep truckin' it north out of the state or at least to the far northern reaches of it. Right now, Dade is in good shape, but if these model tracks pan out, we may not be after Ivan....Several of my neighbors are going out of state - I know 1's going to NY, another's going to Atlanta...they have the right idea I think :)

All those people trying to get out on 7 mile bridge too. Wonder if they'll force both lanes to outgoing only. That would help a lot. Too dangerous? That's a dangerous drive anyway.

Anybody else see a potential catastrophe for evacuations due to insufficient gas supplies in the area?

I think at this point they're trying to do a staged evac to allow for the possibility of needing emergency equip coming south in case of a major accident somewhere along the way.

exactly, this isnt some logistaical nightmare that cant be handled. there are plans in place for all of this.

It's a phased evac tomorrow. They'll start with the people from the 7 Mile Bridge to Key West, then move up from there. Usually US1 is turned into only northbound traffic when they're evacuating. Not gonna be pretty, that's for sure!

I was worried about gas and the evacutions too. Several people even in my area of Central FL are evacuating out of state, to Ohio and Arkansas just to name two.

Ohio or Arkansas sounds a little extreme unless that's where they're originally from.

Plane flights getting booked up fast. I checked Southwest.com out of TIA and there aren't many left, if you are going to fly book now.

Mine is at 6:45am sunday, so I'll head for the airport at 3:00am just in case.

Monroe County residents should evacuate to Florida International University in SW Miami-Dade. The NHC is located on this campus. That is the offical Keys evacuation center. (Alumni here). The shelter is to be opened at 4pm tomorrow, I BELIEVE.

I've lived here about 10 years. Our little town is as beautiful as ever. The school I graduated from is a bit further south....Killian.
