How will Insurance cover damage from multiple storms

#1 Postby PTPatrick » Fri Sep 10, 2004 6:58 am

I was thinking about this last night...how are insureance companies handling damage from multiple storms. I suppose the adjusters just look and see what damage was done after each storm...but I suspect many of the homes after Charley didnt even get looked at yet before Frances (I know this applies mostly to the inland areas near orlando that got hit twice). Just curious if they can really separate the damage...or if in the end they will just write one check for the damage from all 3.

Each storm is considered a separate incident and will incur a separate deductible. My guess is that the state may try to address this, esp if Ivan devastates yet another area of the state.

Simple...tell them all of your damage came from Ivan, your word against theirs

Depends on who can prove what I would imagine. Did hear on a local TV station a discussion stating that in most cases the deductible will be in force for each storm.

I guess in a way I totally understand the insurance companys enforcing each deductable. They have to be able to cover everything and if they didnt then they might run out of money. who knows. Having said that, i dont know how than can do that logistically if they havent already assessed damages from the other storms. Whos to say what damage came from which storm. Or for that matter things like, "Charley left a whole in my roof...Ivan finished it off. "

If you have questions about your insurance you can call 1-800-22STORM. The Florida Dept. of Financial Services.

You are going to see some insurance companies pull out of Florida after this hurricane season. I read that Nationwide is the first to annouce this already. For the ones that do not pull out they will raise their rates to cover this and it won't be cheap. For the ones that live near the coast, I would not want to see what their new premiums are going to be. Not pretty!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to file a claim after Frances cause a 70ft oak tree fell on my roof. The unfortunate part was that I will most likely barely reach my deductible. It's been 4 days since I filed my claim and I haven't even been assigned an adjuster yet. I asked my agent that if I don't reach my deductible if I could withdraw my claim she said no. Once filed it's always there. That is sort of upsetting because they tell you to call the insurance company and file a claim as soon as possible so that they can help you. This whole insurance thing is a pain in the back side. Now Ivan is coming and I hope that I don't have to file a second claim. We have not taken a direct hit here in Jax but with all the old oak trees and pines around here, even a medium tropical storm brings down alot of trees. Lots of homes here with damage.

Hire a Public Adjuster

#11 Postby LakeToho » Fri Sep 10, 2004 9:11 am

I had a Charley Claim, and basically the insurance adjuster came by a couple days later and spent 30 minutes inspecting my house. I did not think that was a proper inspection so I hired a public adjuster. The public adjuster has gotten me more money and pointed out damage that I never would have spotted and trust me neither would your insurance company. They charge a commission off what they get for you (its currently capped at 10%), but they can also assist in positioning damage from multiple storms to one deductable. I was amazed. Sorry do not mean to sound like a commerical, its just people are getting ripped by the insurance companies, and representation is needed to ensure you get everything you can to mitigate your loss..

That IVAN Looks pretty scarey..
