We've already addressed the fact that images linked from other sites don't tap into S2K's bandwidth.

But one thing to consider is the fact that images take longer to load for members using slower modems (I remember the days -- it was only a couples of years ago when I switched to DSL). Could that cause a problem with the server since pages take longer to load for some? Therefore, if we limit the images to only the most necessary...and just provide links to others, pages would load faster and members could read through everything else faster also.

I might be wrong, but I sure remember how aggravating it used to be for me -- waiting for graphics to load and then having a website's server shut down before I could even see the whole thing or read the accompanying text.

I wish there was a way to "archive" old posts (versus deleting outright) as a way to review/relive the history of a weather event. Would archiving help to save space?

I love people who have great ideas, but the best would be to send a couple of dollars to help out.

I sent $5 via paypal and it was an awesome investment.

Let's say that 200 members donated $5...... That would be...... $1,000!

I think there are many people hesitant to use paypal..... so why not just mail them some cash. If you are going to use it just like me and others who put a few bucks in.... why not help.

I'm not forcing anyone to send money. It just seems "right". These forums mean a lot to many of us. I for one want them up 24/7!

A quick sugggestion from another board where I post with annoying frequency:

How about voluntary donation levels? For example, access is free (as it is now), but by Paypaling (is that a real word?) a set amount every year or quarter, people can add certain refinements and added bells and whistles (like the ability to add server-gulping emoticons, gifs, etc.

I'd invite you to take a look at http://www.thetigernet.com to see how it works...once Ivan is out of the way. Oh and all of you Nole fans will want to visit in a couple of weeks anyway before we see y'all in Tally!

Take care!

RevDodd, at a nursing forum that I visit they do the same thing. If you donate $24 per year (or $2 monthly if you prefer), you get a logo under your name that says Premium Member and a few other perks. They only just implemented this a month or two back, and many members have signed up for it. People seem to like the heightened status. I think you're suggestion is a great one.

Jennifer: It also give folks a sense of ownership, makes them feel a little more responsible about their posting and needs of the site. It's a small thing, but just about EVERYBODY can spare a latte a month to keep things up and running.

This will be my last post until after the storm ( not a prof or even really good at forecasts ...yet)

Suggestion...everytime someone posts a good link that I haven't seen before, I bookmark it and check all those sites before coming back here... I'm spreading the load a bit, I hope.

Love ya' Storm2k.... hope to help whenever I can.

Does this apply for all forums? I assume so, but I am just checking to make sure.

2. Try and limit posting to pertinent observations and questions. Frivolous posts and acknowledgements need to be limited.

I've thought this for a while now. I think enough "pruning" could be done to keep one days worth of pertinent posts to one page of threads. I.E., only one thread for RECON reports, one thread for member forecasts, one thread for models, one thread for official NHC statements, and so on. Just my 2 cents worth.

I've been saying this for a while now...... it should be like this regardless of server issues. Nothing more frustrating than having to wade through 823 threads all mentioning the same thing, or related observations.... that's what turns me off from this place more than anything.

Hope the server is fixed soon.......

For people who "forget" to log off and leave but still take up space on the server...I know that my bank logs me off if I have no activity after 10 minutes. You might want to check into that type of action. I am certainly guilty of getting up and forgetting to log off here.

This is a spectacular weather forum. It's a valuable resource for everyone and it's very well run. Thank you Marshall and others for going WAY ABOVE AND BEYOND what would be expected of any admin and mod on any website!

This place is way cool!

Keep up the excellent work!

IS THERE ANY WAY WE CAN ARCHIVE OLD PAGES? FOR EXAMPLE: I WOULD GUESS NOT MANY PEOPLE VISIT BEYOND PAGE 50. COULD THOSE PAGES BE ZIPPED AND CONDENSED TO A SMALLER FILE. ALSO, I THINK "BUMP" HAS TO GO.
I WOULD BE GLAD TO HELP OUT ANY WAY I CAN :D :D
