I haven't been able to get in for a while. This happened about 30min ago.

Interviewing a woman from US NWS. I think I got all this correct. The eye is 35 miles south of Jamaica. Winds at 155mph. Movement 10mph. Currently experiencing 5-8 ft storm surge. 8-12 inches rain expected. Effects to be felt through the day tomorrow. Eye is parrelleling Jamaica coast. She suggested that they may be experiencing as severe weather as they will get and that the eye will pass to the south.

A little later... The female DJ is saying that the NWS said the eye will hit at 6:00 am. (I don't think that could be right, could it?)

Hurricane, gun battles, little food/water - and these peoples' spirits are STILL up... Oh, if only we Americans could look at life the same way. I work at Grand Casino Gulfport where we have about 95 Jamacians working in our hotel and casino on temporary work permits. Some of the most wonderful people you'd ever want to meet.

No, she didn't understand what she was being told. Around 6 p.m. their time, they had a NHC fellow on there and tell her that at the speed it was moving, they would be experiencing hurricane force winds until around 6.p.m. tommorrow evening.

a bishop on... he says the last 2 1/2 hour worse then Gilbert. He doesn't understand why men are out on the street during the storm commiting crimes...he wishes the wifes and girlfriends could keep them at home during the storm. He is offering a prayer and is reading something to the audiance. They played the wind outside a bit ago..was VERY LOUD.

old man: "what we have received during the last 2 and a half hours was worse than Gilbert. If this is going worse, what will it be like? .... The hurricane is an act of god."

If those of us listening to this don't wake up tomorrow with a renewed spirit in humankind, we ought to be ashamed. This is quite an uplifting experience for me.............

I have a map up on my monitor while listening to the reports and phone calls....anyone else notice that there seems to be very VERY few calls from people on the south side of the island? most callers are from towns etc on the northern side :( i don't think thats good news for anyone on the south (storm facing) side.

Bishop is reading scripture and praying with the Jamaican people. (Earlier, the DJ's read an email in which someone suggested that clergy call in. The email also noted that country's leaders had not called in to address the people).

That's a good point. I wonder if the DJs will consider that and try to make some sort of contact in that area???
