Western Trough vs. Atlantic High

I'm not particularly sophisticated in reading WV imagery on the influence of troughs and high pressure areas on storms. On other threads I've seen references to what folks are seeing and thinking based on the interaction with the air flow west and east of Ivan's path. I would welcome a focused conversation here.
