Canadians Tell U.S. Kids, 'America Sucks'

A busload of American "PeeWee" hockey players got a taste of the rabid anti-Americanism that is festering in Canada: They were hooted at, our National Anthem was booed, and people in the street gave them the finger or displayed other rude gestures.

The Massachusetts kids were in Montreal for a PeeWee tournament when residents of this French-speaking city treated them the way one would expect an enemy to be treated: with scorn and hostility.

According to the Toronto Globe & Mail, the 11- and 12-year-old boys from Brockton had been looking forward to the hockey tournament in Montreal. But parents who accompanied them said they were unprepared for the depth of anti-American hatred over the U.S.-led war against Iraq.

During their four-day visit, the young Americans were horrified to see the Stars and Stripes burned and hear the National Anthem booed. When traveling in their bus emblazoned with a red, white and blue "Coach USA" logo, they saw people on the street make angry gestures at them.

Even worse, while playing hockey their Canadian opponents told their American guests that "the U.S. sucks" and shouted other anti-American insults, the boys recalled.

"It was a shock to go to a tournament and have kids saying this to us. These are our friends that are doing this," Brockton Boxers coach Ernest Nadeau told the Globe & Mail. "We didn't expect Canadian players - especially young boys - would take things to that extreme."

I am not trying to start anything, but I just would like some clarification... Who is writing these articles? Why don't they have a by-line.

Good point, Garrett. They look like they were written from some specific news organization, but we really do not know.

I know, but who wrote these articles is almost as important as what is in them. Just like with the LA Times, they are so liberal it makes me want to puke. I want to know who is writing the piece so I know how credible they are.

well i am American living here in Canada. I can say that there is alot of Anti-Americanism up here. Our national anthems ( American ) have been booed here. I can also tell you that not all Canadians are Anti- American. They ( Canadians ) are holding a Pro-War, and Pro-American rally in Toronto this weekend. There is some bad feelings for America up here, but some good feelings.

I know Chad... I am not doubting the truthfulness, but the credibility of who wrote it. If I wrote something, you probably would not believe it as much as if you heard Bill O'Reilly say it. It is a credibility issue. Also, if the media forum such as news max has a conservative bias, this might not be much of a story, but if it was a liberal org, then the fact it got press would be huge... and vice versa about a liberal issue.

Well I blame this type of behavior on the parents of these children. Children are taught this and they pick up on what their parents say.

I have been following along with all posts here this morning and afternoon. I read the articles from Newsmax, Chad posted a little while ago and assumed this article was from them as well. Is NewsMax not a reputable news oganization? :)

Either way that behavior should not be seen. Whether you like the war or not, we are in it and it is happening today.

Would you like a dictator to take over the world by force or would you like to see peace.

It is your choice...and I choose peace!

i read this from http://www.cbc.ca ( Canadian News Channel ):

"OTTAWA - Canadian Alliance leader Stephen Harper presented a parliamentary motion Thursday apologizing to the U.S. for "offensive and inappropriate statements" made by some members of the Liberal government"

The government immediately replied with a motion of its own, reaffirming Canada's decision not to participate in the war on Iraq.
Harper's motion expressed the hope that the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq will be successful and it calls for a speedy rebuilding of the country after the war.

"There is not any reason why any reasonable member of this House should not support this motion," he said.

The Alliance has long been critical of the government's decision not to support the war in Iraq."

more on the story if ya wanna know about it: http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2003/04/03/motion030403

From the location of the tournament, it sounds like those kids were well inside the Quebecoisie (French-speaking Canadian) realm..and the francophones have exhibited NO love for America as long as I can remember, saving possibly WW II (six years prior to my birth).

I Still don't Trust the Frogs

#15 Postby Steve H. » Thu Apr 03, 2003 8:59 pm

I still don't trust the damn French, whether in Canada or Europe. Notice that the US crowd didn't BOO the Russian and Canadien skaters when they competed last week here in the US. Extremely bad form I say. And made the trip of a lifetime for those kids from Brockton a Bummer. Let's not forget the French and Indian war

Funny thing is, THEY are "American" also. They are part of North America. Anti-American does not necessarily mean only Anti-United Sates of America.

Canada, et. al.

That is the result of ethnocentric, isolationist mindsets where 'their way is the only way' and everyone else sucks (especially if the 'everyone else' is the most powerful and democratic country in the world, bails everyone else (including them) out of military or economic conflicts, and is the leader of the Free world. Just a couple small points  As others have said within different threads here, there are many countries and peoples who just don't like us one bit: part of it is jealousy, part of it is spite and denial. They want what we have, the freedoms to think & live the way we do, but when they get the opportunity - all hell breaks loose. Sort of like a teenager who just got a 2-month run of the house & their life when mommie & daddy are away on vacation... :ggreen:

Oh,is that what it is M2?
Or is it the epitome of Penis Envy?
Many US Americans are clueless when it comes to understanding Canada.
I may add the NewsMax is a hack outfit of extremists, that care little for editorial quality. They had a field day after 09-11 with outlandish unsubstantiated 'facts' that they later either retracted or just ignored. They are deadline driven and actually pay commissions to thier ahem 'staff' to 'beat the competition',no matter the cost. They also use a free lance staff of offbeat or deadbeat wannabes.A Tabloid form of UPI if you will.
Canada as a whole cannot be defined as tidy entity, anymore that the Southern or Northern mindsets of our Nation can be.Similarities,yes.Solidarity,not necessarily.
Speak to someone from Montreal,Toronto,Winnipeg,Calgary,Edmonton,Saskatoon,or Vancouver,B.C. and one will get a potpourri of views.
Let's be careful when stigmatizing or alienating a good Friend, who BTW ARE participating in the coalition.
