Pressure drops are the best indication of the strengthening storm .. although the winds themselves take a bit of time to respond to those falloffs ...

Yeah, those pesky Category 5 hurricanes just sneek up on us.
Well, you must admit that the general thinking and guidance for several days prior was that Ivan would likely cross Jamaica and go north of Grand Cayman. Some people may have been "Charley-ed" into thinking it wasn't coming their way.

Pretty impressibe for a storm to be going through an ERC and have a pressure lower than that of Andrew.

Um no if you draw a straight line it just misses it. And, it will go more and more N.

Has anyone heard a comparison to a land mass? For example, Francis was as big as the State of Texas. So far, I haven't heard anything to indicate relative size.

Well..I live north of lake pontchartrain in Mandeville...and they were saying for Georges that if a cat 5 came up the mouth of the river....everything south of I-12 would be underwater..I guess it depends on which way a storm would approach

if he's going to make it through the

Sorry for the double post. Tried to stop the first one from posting but it didn't work. This place is too good!

And just plain naive.

When a storm of this magnitude, is approaching your area, you do not hesitate to make any and all preparations.

If any area should know, I bet the people in Florida where Charley landed, could tell the people in the Caymans about landfall projections.

They better do a mass, fast preparation around Cancun--lots of tourist there and the NHC has been talking about Cuba all of this time....Hope they are prepared in Cancun...They are going to get some bad squalls for Ivan, if nothing else, later this evening.
