Evacuation locations

#1 Postby mrcaptjbird » Sun Sep 12, 2004 3:39 pm

Hi. I love the board. It is addictive. Followed Frances all the way and it is very informative. I am from Mobile and if Tuesday mornng it looks like it could be headed our way, where would any of you locally recommend evacuating to? Everything is in the Cone! We thought about Jackson, MS but if it hit further west like NO or Biloxi that may not be a smart move. Montgomery or Atlanta don't look smart either. I was just curious if any of you from P'Cola to NO planned to leave and if so, where you had thought about going.

Many Thanks

We're further east over in Niceville and looking at going to Birmingham.

I live in a vulnerable community too, so understand your fear, but panic-driven long distant (unnecessary) evaucations have almost shut down Florida this month. Our stressed-out Governor just spoke about this in a live briefing an hour ago.

You are in Mobile so you should definitely leave if your EOC calls for it, but I'm sure you'll be happier if you simply evac to a safer area as close to home as possible.

We had a "gas and road disaster" here during Frances on the FL east coast when people took off for the west coast and other states. People that NEEDED to evacuate from the east beaches north of Vero couldn't find gas and the interstates were parking lots. The absolute worse thing that happened was, because all of the gasoline was gone from the evac, it took these residents almost a week to get home and check their homes!

My humble advice: If you are not facing a Cat 5 landfall, go 50 miles or less inland to a sturdy, concrete block hotel/home/building outside of the evac area and don't go further. You will appreciate the ease of getting back to your home instead of facing gas shortages and backed up interstate roads.

Pensacola/Perdido Key area here...trying now to decide what to do with my family - have 3 little ones and we live in a Cat 4/5 evacuation zone very close to the water. Probably head up to Memphis and stay with friends...this storm doesn't look good for us! :(

Yep. I went 5 miles (just over the bridge to the mainland.) It took less than 15 minutes to get home. No fuss no muss and only used a capful of gas.

I personally like the option of flying out on a vacation, if you feel you need to go more than a few miles.

One of my family members managed to get inexpensive tickets to Las Vegas and found a friend with a condo there that was not being used.
So, she buttoned up her place and is out in Vegas enoying herself. Again, no fuss, no muss. Just a little creativity.

Central Mississippi/Alabama will be fine. At worst, there will be hurricane force gusts up there. As long as the track doesn't shift significantly west, Jackson or Birmingham will be perfectly fine. Even simply going an hour inland is a lot better.
