New Orleans Evacuation

#6341 Postby TS Zack » Sun Sep 12, 2004 4:16 pm

I am getting reports from officials in New Orleans that a voluntary evacuation may be put into place in the next 24 hours. Definitely outside the levee protection areas.

I think the upwelling referred to is from something other than the hurricane itself. Instead, it refrences to a geographic origination.

My question is who would live outside the levee protection areas? Does that mean they live below sea level without any protection?

I heard that an evacuation order for lower Plaquemines parish(toward mouth of river) has just about been decided on and will be announced tomorrow morning. Heard this from a friend who is a councilman down there.

Well NO is below seas level so even if they get outer bands I could see why.

TS, I am in Metairie, obviously inside the levee prot. area. Have the local mets said anything else about this storm lately? Just wasted my day at the Saints game, so have not heard anything today. Thanks.

My decision will be made roughly noon tomorrow. I'll try to be one of the first out.

Some parts of New Orleans are almost 20 feet below sea level, so it comes as no suprise that evacuation orders may come earlier than most places.

Where are you getting thes reports? Ivan is not even made it to the Gulf yet. I agree that the N.O. area needs as much time as possible to evacuate, but this may be jumping the gun a bit.

What were the evacuation orders like for Georges in 1998? New Orleans was evacuated at that time, were they not?

There are many places in south LA that are outside the levee protection. In fact, ALL of Terrobone parish has no protection. I have a 2nd home (aka fishing camp, lol) there and they're not worried about storms as often as they are high tide with a south wind.

John Gumm just said the FSU S.E. has shifted to Biloxi. He says he thinks the track should be shifted further West of the models. He is a bit nervous.

We are all below sea level but Levee's protect us from Flood Waters. Outside the flood protection levee's all it takes is 1-2 foot above normal tides to flood that area.

I bet it's the picture of a fictitious Ivan track which traces a hand with the middle finger extended before going to Florida. If so, that's from a few days ago when they thought we were getting a third hurricane in a month.

It was simply a parody of the NHC 3 day forecast graphic with Ivan's track making "a bird".

We'll just have to see how the track is tomorrow at this time---then you will hear about whether or not the metro area will be evacuated. But, it makes sense to start getting all of those people thinking outside of the levees. Even if their homes are built up high, they still need to get out the way of this one....

Sean, we have so little wetlands anymore, n o barriers out there south of grand isle, really almost setting themselves up for a major problem.

Dont understand whypeople keep building down there, besides the obvious, by the water, etc
