New Orleans cheap hotels for FL evacuees ?

#1 Postby HollynLA » Sun Sep 12, 2004 6:28 pm

I saw this on the WBRZ news this afternoon and I'm seriously confused. They said many hotels in New Orleans were offereing discounted rates for those who need to evacuate from Florida for Ivan. Huh?? Wouldn't N.O. be the last place you want to go as it could possibly get hit also? Then the news showed how Tampa residents were preparing by gassing up, boarding up, etc. No mention of possible problems for LA, MS, AL, etc. And this is a southern LA news channel based out of Baton Rouge.

Holly, in about two days I will rent you or anyone my apt here in Metairie, if it keeps going west. Cheap rate. Please just mop up occasionally.

Baton Rouge has the absolute worst local news in the entire country. Just be wary of that.

At 6:00 they reported that Louisiana was going to be spared this storm and that the florida panhandle should continue with preps. JUST LIKE LILLI, ANDREW, ETC. Baton Rouge news will not speculate about anything they simply follow the NHC track and sometimes it seems that even this is out of date.

Our local news (Tallahassee) is predicting a St. George Island landfall, which would put them pretty close to the NHC prediction right now. I made hotel reservations in Tifton, GA, if we need to evacuate. That's about 40 miles east of us, about 100 miles east of St. George Island. Should put us out of range of hurricane force winds, but off of I-75 for the drive up.

But, if this storm isn't predicted to go ashore as a 3 or higher, we're staying put.
