I seriously doubt that this is going < 910. Every time it hits 910, it jumps back up again! I wonder if this time it'll stay down.

This is weird.Ivan has bee going up and down in pressure all day.No real trend in either direction

LIGHTNING IN THE EYE WALL?????


Thats not normal. In hurricanes, if there is lightning its in the extreme outer bands.

Lightning involves Ice Crystals, Tropical Systems involve heat and tropical moisture. The two don't mix very well.

I guess that just shows how cold the cloud tops are.

of Typhoons Irma and Kim came over Clark AB we had thunderstorms.

There is ice in the far upper portions of the eyewall. The reason we don't typically see t-storms there is because the instability is very low owing to the lack of surface heating, and the very warm air in the center of the storm at mid-levels. We start dealing w/ different kinds of instability here than you would think of for more continental, mid-latitude thunderstorms, where very cold air is located above warm, buoyant and moist surface air. Only very strong hurricanes typically see lightning in their inner core.
