I thought 160 mph was a cat 5? I know everything is estimated right now, so I guess we'll see.

Now I know I need sleep. I saw the above post and pondered (momentarily) a cat. 24 hurricane. :double:

160 is NOT less than 156 (which as we all SHOULD know is min Cat 5 strength). You cannot say that 160 is cat 4 unless you don't know your tropical stuff.

You have learned well, my young padawan.

(Sorry, just having a bit of fun... :D )

Even if this storm is Cat 4 that doesn't make it any less dangerous, these fluctuations in intensity have been forecast. NHC themselves will admit that forecasting intensity is a crapshoot.

Keep in mind three important things.

1) Ivan is still a very powerful borderline Cat 4/Cat 5 hurricane.

2) Ivan has been near two very large land masses for about 24 hours.

3) Just like when pressure goes down it takes a while for winds to go up, when pressure goes up it takes a bit for winds to go down.

Ivan is still a dangerous storm!
