I'm afraid AL/GA/TN/SC/NC all will have major flooding. We had almost 3" from Frances plus a lot from other events, and they are predicting 6-8" here which we cannot handle. With the NHC track taking it so slow across the state, I'm expecting some 10-12" amounts. :(

Asheville, NC just got it's city water lines back up...talked to a Wxbuddy who is a 2nd year met major at UNC-Asheville and he said that right now the water is still brownish in color...so far can use the water only for flushing toilets. Scenes still fresh from the news last week of Biltmore Village, a Lowe's store lot, etc., turned into a lake! :(

I really enjoy Western N.C.

Hoping Ivan moves fast through that area

I am in Asheville, and indeed it was pretty bad here last week. Several buildings along the Swanannoa river along Hwy 81 have been condemned or probably will be.The water has been restored to Asheville now but in the event of another flood the pipe fixes will most likely wash out again, the city used road bond to support the pipes where they washed out and broke last week.
I know some dams in WNC were being watched for any leaks last week or if water started flowing over the top , one was the lake logan dam in haywood county as i recall. And the State DOT said there would be more landslides along I-40.

I saw where John Edwards visited Canton, NC on the news this past weekend
there in Haywood County...also heard that the paper mill in Canton near the Pigeon River had some flooding, too.

My Dad used to work for Champion Int'l. Paper...which used to be in Canton...I went w/ him one time on a business trip to that beautiful town.

The question remains track and speed...If we get a slow moving Ivan to the west of us....what a crapper that will be. Of course the interesting thing is that this isn't even on the radar for all of those interested in the cane. It may be just an afterthought

Looking at the models and forecasted stall for Ivan I think a number of Dams in the mountains will be in danger. Frances took many to the brink. Hope the media gets busy advising residents to be aware. Maybe testing those dam horns would not be a bad idea!!!!!!

24 hr FFG along the Alleghanies and Blue Ridge in VA remains at ~ 3".
Rainfall at or above 2X 24 hr FFG borders on catastrophic river flooding.
Ivan will likely stall over E TN/W NC and extreme SW VA. If that verifies, this will be the worst flood in western VA since 1985.

As long as it isn't the Fontana Dam...... Because if that big joker breaks it is all over for a lot of people. Just visited there on Labor Day weekend.

Fontana Dam is probably the strongest in WNC so no problems there, most of the problem ones were smaller older dams or earthen dams on private property. Hopefully the moisture will be running ahead of the center of circulation and if it stalls or slows down, the mountains of WNC wont be under the most intense rainfall, But being on the eastern side of the circulation we will still get training rain bands with imbedded tornados.

Even though my worries at the moment are with those on the GOM coast in Ivan's path(including my mom in Destin area), I am becoming more and more concerned that this may turn into a disastrous flooding situation for the rest of the Southeast. Ivan is a slow mover and has been. That is one bad thing about Ivan and will probably continue to be. the other is the fact that almost all of the models appear to be stalling him in the vicinity of the TN/NC/SC border areas. I hope the weather pattern changes and begins to move more instead of being as sluggish as it is right now for everyones sake all over the SE.

Brent - I wouldn't be surprised to see up to 20" in AL GA and TN (and maybe some locations further north in the mountains). It is looking more and more likely that Ivan will stall now - the heaviest rains will just depend on how soon that occurs.

All the models are coming into more agreement about a stall? Great. I am sure we can start getting easterly fetch winds into NC/SC/GA in the next day and from there on it will be interesting...
