MS Coast Casinos Shut Down...

Well. today at noon, all the casinos on the MS Gulf Coast were ordered to close and all guests are now off. The only employees remaining on board at this time are those who are readying the barges for a storm. This includes disconnecting the links that transition from the boat to land and all the utilities. When I left the Grand in Gulfport at about 1:15, it was very errie inside. EVERY slot and EVERY table was covered with plastic and there was NO noise from the slot machines. Strange indeed.

Unfortunately, all the preparation may be for naught. These vessels can only float up about 12 feet before they max out on their mooring.....

Hope I (and the other 15,000 casino workers) still have a job when this is all over.

This is an event I have been dreading ever since they built them. I hope they survive it, but my thoughts are they won't.

I think they'll survive.
My question is off topic but to those that live there.
Are the casino's a good thing or a bad thing.
Have they actually improved the lives of those that live in the area other than motels, restaurants etc.
Has crime goine up etc?

Good Thing - benefits far outweigh the downside.

I can't speak for casinos in MS, but in IN they have done wonders for financial troubles in the counties in which they reside. New roads everywhere, improvements at schools, more businesses going up around the casinos, tourism, etc. I have heard no problem yet of crime...only some trouble w/ addictions, but you'll have that. If they weren't addicted to gambling, they'd be addicted to alcohol, sex, or Storm2K. ;)

Couldn't they take the casinos up the river? or bay?

These casinos are huge and unpowered. If they get loose the only way they will stop is to crash into something, the bank or whatever.

They are barges in a sense, but massive unpowered barges with no steerage.

NO not anymore the barges are too large and really not worth the cost of tyring earlier barges and paddle wheels were okay to move. The casinos use a mooring system rated for 155 this has only been really tried once in 1998 hurricane georges all faired well with the exception on treasure bay which broke loose from its mooring! it was later reported there were MAJOR connection flaws in Treasue Bays Moorings...With that said I believe a major hurricane strike would severly damage the gaming industry for awhile but it would survive :cry:
