May Mayfield was on local show last weekend here in the Tampa area and said "we use to say people in Florida had Hurricance Amnesia and now we're saying they have Hurricane Anxiety. HOW TRUE! For the last month we've been buying supplies, evacuating, preparing to evacuate, cutting trees down, fixing roofs, sitting without power, trying to find gas and lastly riding out the storm (you pick which one here). It is amazing how many people are taking interest in Hurricanes now. I don't know about you guys but people are always trying to pick my brains for what is going on or gonna happen. Yeah right, like I would have a clue. Where did Summer go?

Truer words cannot be spoken. I have lived in Pasco County, right above Tampa, for 24 years.

NEVER, have I worried about hurricanes. My motto...."They always go somewhere else" (I was a kid during Elena, didn't care!)

Boy, how times have changed. The past month, my head has been stuck inside the "Storm Gutter" Wishing to pull it out real soon.....

Its like the last month and a half people's live have been dominated by the current track of the current storm and just preparing for the next possible diaster. Besides having stresses over where we can get batteries and gas the next time.

We've lived in the Tampa Bay area since '82. I have never seen a hurricane season like this.

We live in a senior park, and several residents are native Floridians. Even they are saying this is one of the worst seasons they remember.

With Jeanne, it is just too early to tell where -- if anywhere -- in FL she will landfall. There is a group of models suggesting a turn to the NW and N a few hundred miles offshore, and a smaller group suggesting a move more WNW toward the FL straits or Peninsula. My personal belief is that it's going to be a close call. As Stewart noted in the NHC forecast, the models have been underestimating the strength of the Atlantic ridge consistently for the past several days. It's really all about Ivan ... specifically, what he does after landfall. And speaking of that, I hope all you northern GOMEX folks are ready for this. It could be as strong as Charley but with a core of destructive winds that's 3 to 4 times the size of the core in Charley. Please take the proper precautions.

Yeah - seems like we get to breathe for one for about 12 hours before another one is on our horizon. I don't care whether they *think* Jeanne is going north or not - all I know is that these storms this year aren't quite acting the way they're predicted to, and I'm in the cone again. That means my Storm2K addiction will continue for awhile and my work will slide again - geez....

I was born, raised, and have lived in Tampa for past 50+ years. I have followed storms and hurricanes since Hurricane Donna in 1960. We would usually have 1 or 2 storms a year that might come close, but only 1-2 ever made landfall around Tampa. Now we have 3 major hurricanes in 5 weeks, another hurricane threatening again, and our peak season is from now to end of October. It has been truly an experience that I have never experienced nor desire to do so again. It will be over soon and we can sit back tell our grandchildren stories about this experience. And the best part so far is that we have been so fortunate not to have had a direct strike. I feel for those folks in the Florida panhandle and along the Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama coasts. God's speed and protection to you all.

Everyone in Florida should have hurricane anxiety. The pattern has definately changed this year.

I spoke to DT earlier today in Teamspeak and he said that Jeanne has Florida all over it. He said a ridge would dig in over Florida causing Jeanne to go west. He did not feel Jeanne would get higher than 25-28 N. Looks like another sleepless week and we are not even done with Ivan.

I, too, am a longtime FL resident (31 years) and never remember the anxiety level being anywhere near where it is this year. We've had some close calls. I specifically remember around Labor Day in 1979 when David and Frederick were both in the picture. I can't believe what this year has brought and now they are saying that this may be a 10 year trend. Yikes!!!

Even if Jeanne heads in the direction of FL -- and the models are split on that face -- she faces a lot of obstacles in terms of strengthening. She will likely move over or very close to Puerto Rico (unfortunately for our friends there -- good luck!). Then, she will likely move very close to Hispanola ... a cemetary for many a tropical system. If she moves more north, she'll be moving over some of the same waters Frances churned up, so latent heat content may not be that high. Bottom line -- even if she heads toward FL, I don't THINK we'll be facing another major storm, and it could even be just a TS. Last but not least, if Ivan stalls after landfall, Jeanne will get pulled north because a ridge won't rebuild fast enough to steer her towards us.

Bottom line -- I'm not that concerned yet. But in 2 days, depending on how the situation looks, I might have to get worried!

I am also a 48-yr-old native Floridian. Born in Miami, lived at several places between South and Central FL, but always on the east coast. I definitely have some scary memories from the past storms, but modern day forecasting has been both a blessing and a curse. While I would never want to "turn back time", because the latest forecast tools have saved untold thousands of lives, the pre-storm anxiety added is something my grandparents didn't have to endure. I'm not really sure how they figured it out at the time, but swirling clouds and crabs crossing streets from the beach had something to do with it. I know that we always had our shutters installed in time. We lost furnishings and carpetings to water damage from flooding and broken windows, but luckily never lost a house. Going without power afterwards was not an issue, because we didn't have A/C anyways.

Very best prayers and wishes to all those in the path of Ivan.

I'm starting a separate thread to send similar sentiments to all those Gulf Coast people that sent wishes our way when the peninsula of Florida was the bulls eye several times over the last month or so. Hope you add your reply.

Jeanne will almost certainly pass through the Hebert Box, correct?

Also, historically, storms that form closer in like that are more likely to affect the FL east coast than the long-tracking Cape Verdes, right?
