GALVESTON COUNTY WATCHING IVAN CLOSELY
Emergency management officials from across Galveston County were watching powerful Hurricane Ivan closely Tuesday as it churned in the Gulf of Mexico.
While no emergency operations centers in the county have opened for 24-hour duty, emergency coordinators have participated in several conference calls to discuss "what if?" should Ivan fail to follow its projected path and make landfall Thursday somewhere between central Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle.
The Category 4 hurricane is contributing to higher-than-normal tides, but weather forecasters do not anticipate tide levels to rise more than 2-3 feet above normal on Wednesday and Thursday.
Still, tides are always a concern for Galveston County residents, especially those residing in low-lying areas such as Bolivar Peninsula and West Galveston Island. Accordingly the county will be paying close attention to the tides in the event additional action, including recommended evacuations, is warranted.
In the meantime citizens are reminded to review their personal evacuation plans, stock their hurricane supply kits and watch local news media for the latest information.
