Some New Orleans Traffic Cams

#1 Postby Sean in New Orleans » Tue Sep 14, 2004 4:10 pm

Here are some traffic cams and a view of the exit of the City. Please note that these cams are connected with WWL-TV website and WWL requires one of those routine registrations to view. http://www.wwltv.com/traffic/index.html

Here's some where you don't have to register (at least I don't think---it's NOLA.com)

Hey Sean have you noticed the lack of birds?

While I was working in the yard, I found it eeriely quiet.

Usually at this time of day the air would be filled with the sound of singing birds.

No birds and much fewer people. I was just running some last errands around Uptown and traffic is relatively light. I was also listening to WWL-AM radio and heard the drive across the Causeway is pushing 3 hours and from New Orleans to Baton Rouge is 6+ hours. It's almost a parking lot from New Orleans to Lake Charles on I-10 West---another traffic nightmare scenario that is similar to what occurred during Georges.

Yes, I'm one of the ones staying. I live on the 2nd floor of a 3 story concrete building that was built in the 1930's....very strong building. I also live in Uptown New Orleans which is inside of the "crescent" of the Mississippi River, hence, I live on some of the higher ground inside of New Orleans. My vehicles are being placed inside of a concrete parking garage Downtown,in the morning, on the third level, that is closed to the outside...so my vehicles are also protected. I'm ready to ride it out...am prepared to lose power, have plenty of food, ice, and water, etc. I have my NOAA Weather radio, which also will allow me to listen to local television, and news radio. Unfortunately, I do not have a laptop here, so I will lose internet when I lose cable or power (whichever goes first). There are also other neighbors of mine who live in this building that will be here for the storm, as well.

The 'no bird' thing is kinda freaky. Many think animals senses know best when danger is immenent. Are they flying north I guess? :)

Frtiz:

Are you staying too? Sounds as if Sean has everything under control but will still worry about all of you. It's the mother hen in me (Also, I have a son named Sean who's probably about your age).

Yeah, I live on a natural ridge ( ≈ sea level). Got the valuables up in the air and a boat in the yard just incase.

Several neighbors called to say they were staying, so we have a plan incase we need to help each other.

Betsy barely covered the floor here in 65.

I will post updates when the storm nears til my power goes out.
(Which won't be long cause afternoon T'storms do it regularly)

Note for NO residents: This is Paul from NOE praying for all of us.

I drove from Dallas to BR today since my wife and kids are here. The traffic on I-10 is absolutely horrible. I feel so bad for those people.

I loaded the car and left at 3pm, I-10 east. Parking lot. 4 hours to Slidell and traffic still crawling. The closed Wendy's was like a rest stop for many cars, people and dogs. The radio, WWL, kept saying Pascagoula is landfall. So I came back home in about 20-25 min. Don't think I was alone. Will keep monitoring and may try again later. They need to open the westbound of I-10 for east traffic. Coming home I saw all the cones at the crossover but not set up yet. Go figure.

Interesting you all are talking about birds. 2 days before Frances blew through, there were NO birds, however the next day, the birds returned and I figured that might mean some relief the NHC didn't know about. But the birds were WRONG! Many were found dead and injured.

My advice for you in New Orleans is the same for my mother-in-law is Buras, LA get out now!!!! I know about all your stuborn tendencies and pride, I'm married into a cajun family. Get out now!!!

I just got power back from Frances (10 days after the storm) the eye went over my home here in Stuart, FL. Your situation in New Orleans will be much worse. I was a civil engineer there for three years, your power infrastructure is terrible at best. I helped design some of the levees for the Corps and have been in quite a few of the pump stations around the city. The storm surge here was a good 5 to 6 feet inshore... one break in the levee system or too much rain with the pumps shut down and all are in a lot of trouble.

My fellow engineers in the city left this morning. You are in the worst possible city for this storm.
