Still CAT 1 100 miles inland???

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Still CAT 1 100 miles inland???

#1 Postby caneweary » Tue Sep 14, 2004 10:51 pm

Sorry if this has already been posted, but this part of the 11pm NHC discussion caught my eye:

SINCE IVAN IS SO LARGE AND INTENSE...IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CARRY STRONG AND DAMAGING WINDS WELL INLAND ALONG ITS PATH. NOTE THAT THE OFFICIAL FORECAST INDICATES THAT THE SYSTEM WILL STILL BE AT HURRICANE STRENGTH 12 HOURS AFTER LANDFALL.

Yikes!! If my mapping skills aren't skewiff, then according to the projected inland path coordinates that's like 100 miles inland!! I sure hope all those people are being warned that a CAT 1 hurricane might drop by!!

Yes. It's forecast to be at my latitude 100 miles to the west too. I'm not looking forward to it. :(

Hoping it weakens quicker than that.

Just ask my daughter about "Charley" passing over her head (2 mi. west of Univ of Central FL). I'd warned her about Donna and inland hurricane inland windfields, and urged her to come home to a stronger structure. She just didn't get it. After terrifying wind events and no power for three days, she now "gets it."

Central FL seems WAY inland on Charley's path from SW FL through Orlando. Not!

I hope so too, Brent. Have you all boarded up just in case? Is anyone in your area making any preparations?

Hoping Ivan blows himself out and leaves you alone!!

Oh how I can relate to that statement. We were dealt a pretty nasty blow!!

Also, while inland areas don't deal directly with the storm surge, they are often the areas targeted by spawned tornado's and experience the flooding rains. Please do not think you will not be affected by Ivan if you are inland. All need to be prepared to take appropriate shelter and precautions.

Frances was a hurricane just short of Tampa. If you ask me it was still a hurricane. 100 miles sounds short of reality, considering the proposed strength of Ivan at landfall.

Yeah, Charley passed quite close to us here as well so I surely understand hurricanes overruning a peninsula. But I guess because I'm new to all this it just didn't occur to me before that these things can stay so strong so far inland even when there isn't a big pond of water waiting ahead of it.

I'm worried for those people in MS/AL, especially those inland who might be thinking like your daughter!

We are still trying to get back to normal after Frances. My wife & I are originally from Alabama. We have family in Mobile, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Pell City & Sheffield. Tuscaloosa, Birmingham & Pell City are taking this very seriously. They expect 70 - 90 MPH winds with Tornados & heavy rain. TWC has said when Ivan stalls over NE Alabama & SE Tennessee that the flooding could be "Biblical" The nephew in Mobile has evacuated to Birmingham!!
