STAYING in a 10th floor beachfront condo in Biloxi!!

#1 Postby gtalum » Wed Sep 15, 2004 9:10 am

A poster on another BB that I frequent has decided to stay in his 10th floor beachfront condo in Biloxi. He thinks it's too late to leave (and I guess is probably right). His condo has a sliding glass door on the beach side of the building. What advice should I offer?

And if you can't convince him to go, at least warn him that he needs to seek higher ground...but NOT THAT HIGH!

Go to a shelter...or at least a lower floor and away from glass. And he should expect to shiver and shake for at least 10 hours (this stuff doesn't end in 2 hours like a Hollywood movie). And finally, take aspirin or he'll have one heck of a headache.

High-rise buildings can expect sustained winds a category higher than what is occurring on the ground, so, if this comes as a Cat 4, winds of Cat 5 intensity can be expected.

I vote for the shelter too, at least you are around other people. Being alone in a storm sucks.

I wouldn't stay that high. If he insists on staying in the building, the stairwell down around the third or fourth floor is probably about the best one could do. Concrete walls and above any storm surge. But in his situation, I'd head for the nearest shelter now (not that I'd be in his situation in the first place).

get OUT :( I heard from Al Roker, that being in the 30th floor constitutes as being in a category 5... 10th floor is too close! GET OUT.

If someone will not leave a place that is hazardous, get his location information and give it to his local authorities, so that they may get a "head count" on him afterwards.

At least he can pick any floor he wants. There will only be a few people left in the condo.

10th floor of a condo? sliding glass door? at/near landfall?

Also, local ES personnel would certainly appreciate this Rhodes Scholar writing IN INDELIBLE INK his SSN up his arm and down his leg. That's helpful when trying to ID someone after the landfall.
