Which Will Be More Destructive: Ivan vs. Charley

#1 Postby Hurricane Cheese » Wed Sep 15, 2004 11:19 am

I'm curious to hear people's opinions on this, as I've heard conflicting reports.

Charley I believe surpassed Hugo as the nation's second costliest Hurricane. It came in as a relatively small storm with its strong 145 mph winds.

Ivan is coming in with a bigger circulation containing 125-135 mph winds. Ivan also will be hitting a higher populated area.

So my question is, will Ivan be worse than Charley?

Probably Ivan for the reasons you stated above, and that it may stall causing much inland flooding in areas already soaked.

For landfall, it depends on where Ivan goes in. In the final analysis, it's going to be Ivan if the southern US stall verifies and the flooding lives up to its potential.

Probably Ivan unless he moves faster than forecast. A lot of areas he will be headed towards(especially farther inland GA/TN/SC don't need rain)

also consider Ivan destroyed some high dollar merchandise in the Caymans, as well as it will be nearly directly impacting a pretty big city as well as side impacting New Orleans. I think Ivan will leave a very expensive pricetag on his destruction.

Ivan is also bigger than Charley. And if my memory is correct Ivan is also moving slower. My vote is for Ivan.

Charley struck an unpopulated area and Ivan is gonna be affecting at least 3 good size cities...Pensacola, Mobile, Biloxi/gulfport, New Orleans... Not to mention plenty of flooding when it stalls... I think Ivan could be the best of 3 (charley, frances, ivan)

Would this mean that Ivan would become the nation's SECOND costliest hurricane...behind only Andrew!?!

Current list...

1. Andrew
2. Ivan?
3. Charley
4. Hugo

I think Ivan will be the all-time US champ in damage, by a wide margin.

i know nothing has happened yet (here in the US that is) but we could have 2 of the top 5 costliest hurricanes in one year with Ivan and Charley. And to think we dogged a bullet with Frances (that baby had 140 mph winds with Mia, Ft. Lauderdale, and WPB in her sites) whew . . . what a summer. Well not really even "a summer," more like 3/4 weeks!!

I think Ivan may even rival Andrew for Damage Costs if the modeled stall happens. Remember floyd? Believe we will be talking about Floyd type flooding on a larger scale..added to landfall added to all the other places it hit.. The figure is definately gonna be atronomical.

Appears Ivan is holding his own/intensifying now on IR...

135 mph seems to be about right for landfall.

Hugo had a 20 ft storm surge with that intensity!!

I think Ivan's surge will be higher than Hugo's, because Ivan has been extremely strong for a while, and not to mention it is larger than Hugo.

Yes, it will be worse. By alot. It will probably come close to Andrew, maybe pass him.

This is Opal except much stronger, larger (I think, but I don't know by how much), and its moving slower.

Opal wreaked havoc al through Alabama and Georgia, up to Chatanooga even (yes, not just rain, but extensive wind damage). Ivan will be worse.
