Fox8 in N.O. freaking me out

#1 Postby TSmith274 » Wed Sep 15, 2004 12:52 pm

Fox 8 in N.O. just said that the latest coordinates are bad news for us. I'm still here in N.O. All morning they were saying Mobile and we might not even get an inch of rain, etc.. Now they say it's moved .5 degrees N and .2 degrees W. He's like "this is not what we want. We want it stop all progress west and that's not happening". Also, it's picked up speed to 14mph. I had to come back home because of an overbooked hotel. When do yall see this westward progress stopping?
P.S. Water is now at the top of the seawall(not floodwall) on Lake Ponchartrain. Thought yall might be interested.

Water is NOT on top of the seawall. It is up to the steps, but the seawall, levee is still 10-12 ft higher.

I completely agree with you, it baffles me as to why they listed the movement as due N when i clearly has picked up some more westward motion. Now, it may not be much of a westward motion, but it could change landfall significantly. I sure hope no one in central MS decided not to leave based on this due N movement and Mobile landfall.

The movement is 350 right now which is almost due north. This is for the last time NOT going to hit New Orleans. The fartherst west possible is Biloxi/Pascagoula.

The seawall is the steps. The water will not go over the levee, or "floodwall". And Brent, don't act like this is a burden on you to tell me it's not coming here. If it's not, fine. Good luck to yall in Alabama.

Now Brent, we've all been through this before. Saying never - especially when a stom is still south of one's latitude - has bitten many a S2K member on the behind!!

Brent, you can say it's LIKELY that it won't hit New Orleans but you shouldn't say with such authority that it won't. These hurricanes don't always do exactly what they're supposed to do. Charley and Frances just reminded us of that by surprising us shortly before landfall.

I've stayed home. I felt really good about it this morning, especially when I saw the "due N" movement. However, now I'm kinda wondering about the actual movement which is truly NNW. I hope it goes N soon or the worse our conditions will be.

BTW: Brent, no one said it was coming to N.O., I suggested landfall would be closer to MS coastline rather than Mobile. Why did that make you so angry?

The concern is how close it passes to the mouth of the river, Brent!

Water is coming over the seawall. I saw it about an hour ago on TV and the WWL reporter for WWL radio just did a live report from there saying water is topping the seawall and some areas already have standoing water (parts of Lakeshore Drive).

The seawall at teh lakefront is about 3-4 feet above normal lake level. It is not a protection measure ala the levee or floodwall or floodgates. It is erosion protection. I live by the lakefront and cold front regularly splash water onto Lakeshore drive. Lakeshore drive is on the lake side of the levee. Water coming over the seawall does not mean New Orleans is about to be inundated. From the flooding right now, it is many magnitudes less than Isadore a few years ago, and that did not breach the levees.

Here's something I think the people in Louisiana will relate to:

What if this pulls a "Lili", and falls apart a bit before coming on shore, veering it to the left?

I'm not saying it will, but you can never tell.

(for the record, I never saw that coming with Lili)

Because he's from Alabama? heh. But Brent's a good guy. Everyone gets testy waiting for a storm and everyone has a reason why they think it's coming to them while everyone else tends to be emphatic about why it isn't.
