Why no weather channel newcasters in New Orleans?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Why no weather channel newcasters in New Orleans?

#1 Postby cind52 » Wed Sep 15, 2004 2:09 pm

Are they so convinced that New Orleans is not in any danger that they don't feel it necessary to report live from NewOrleans.
We look like we are in for it maybe not as bad every other place but we are going to get hammered too. Just wondering. Cind52

My guess would be because New Orleans is built below sea level, and if you had to pick one place that would experience higher then average flooding, that would be it. Flooding can strand people - no point in doing that to a news crew. Stranded with no power means they can't broadcast.

Anyone on here near Destin? What are the local mets saying? What are the conditions in your area?

Maybe because they don't want to drown? And because the eyewall will likely hit Mobile, where Steph is. And the right front quadrant will hit the western panhandle where they have crews.

They can report the extreme conditions from there with less risk of there lives..

If the storm were going to make a direct hit on New Orleans, someone would be there. It is going east of there.

I'm north of the bridge from Destin. Not too bad wind or rain inland yet. Probably much windier on the coast, and storm surge is reportedly worse than Opal. Am somewhat surprised we haven't lost power yet.

If the storm were to hit Nah-lins.. I don't think they'd even have people there.. It's below sea level which means storm surge and flooding would be catastrophic. I think they're doing it for safety purposes..

I'm not sure but I think earlier I saw on TWC, a report from NO where they used an ABC reporter to see what things were like here. I think they're trying to stretch their resources out to cover as many areas as possible.

Cantore is in Destin...they should put him in NOLA to keep it away from there for sure.
