Planned Destin Vacation (yeah,, Right,, I know)

Just joined the group a few days ago. Am watching closely because of family in Mobile.

But ... I had plans (and laid out a deposit) for a week long vacation in Destin in a Gulf front Townhome with beach access next week. What level of damage does the group see for area?

Also I own an undeveloped lot on the eastern end of Dolphin Is.. Just taking a wait and see on that one.

From what I am watching in Destin on live cam, it will be NO vacation when/if you get there. In fact, if it's anything like Fort Myers, nobody but locals will be allowed there for a week or two if the damage is bad enough.

Ive heard HWY 98 is almost a washout already. It'll be tough access for a while.

Yet!! As the night progresses, many of the beachfront condo's will begin gettting water, etc. in them if they aren't already. Definitely a call ahead would be in order before heading that way!! It is possible they may be undamaged, but it is not probable.

I'd choose anothr Destin - ation.....they may be cleaning up for quite a while in Destin.

Opal blew out the highway 98 between FWB and Destin in 1995 and demolished the dunes. Some structures had lots of damage, while others were untouched. It's hard to say. Biggest secret of Florida, the Emerald Coast.. My Dad is there and I'm praying that they all make it through ok.

I heard a report earlier Highway 98 is covered with water on Okaloosa Island.

The damage will be severe, I would lay my bets on that vacation NOT happening.

It really depends on where the townhouse is. There are a lot of buildings south of the coastal control line that were going to be toast the next Big One. If the place has a bit of elevation and moderate dune protection, and the roads are passable, and the power is on, you might be okay.

US 98 got overwash with George in 1998 and reopened within two days. (and was getting heavy truck traffic rerouted onto it because I-10 and US 90 in Crestview were impassable because of flooding for about a week) It all depends on how much the water moves the sand under the roadway.
