This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Pensacola shelter problems near water (per newspaper)

#1 Postby anjou » Wed Sep 15, 2004 10:36 pm

UPDATE: 12:12am EDT - nearly 3k people in Pensacola Civic Center per FoxNewsChannel... saying reports of water problems there were overblown - but notes it IS near the coast... the shelter did lose power for awhile... it MIGHT be back on - he's expecting video shortly from the civic center.

---

Now here's the rest of my original post...

Pensacola News Journal article:
http://pensacolanewsjournal.com/hurrica ... news.shtml

"The general public shelter at the Pensacola Civic Center reached capacity early today after officials decided to limit the number of refugees to 1,600.

Shelter manager Tim Ehly said the center's main dome might not withstand the hurricane-force winds brought by Ivan.

"The capacity of the Civic Center during regular events is much different than capacity during a storm," Ehly said. "We reduced the capacity because we believe the winds are going to be very strong and we're concerned the roof of the main dome may blow off."

Escambia County sheriff's deputies were at the Civic Center to redirect people to other shelters. They were providing maps and a list of shelters.

Civic Center officials have been moving refugees around the facility, first from the floor-level to avoid flooding, then away from areas where the roof could collapse. People are now being placed in arena offices and similar locations. People meeting loved ones will be allowed in the shelter. A nurse is on call to handle minor injuries."

---

Found that out after reading elsewhere...

From another message board: "Reports that Pensacola Coliseum is flooding. Over 2000 people are using it as a shelter."

FoxNewsChannel at about 11:30pm Eastern mentioned something about a shelter not THAT far from the water said to have problems... something about a crew going to check it out.

----

There IS no Pensacola coliseum that I know of, but there is the Pensacola civic center, not far from the water, that is indeed being used as a shelter according to the county (Escambia) emergenecy management Web page.

A map is here:

Someone else on the aforementioned other message board also said something about tornado touchdown on 9th.

There's a Pensacola storm surge map here, but I haven't been able to figure out how to overlay it with the other map in terms of how low-lying the shelter may be.

That article in the Pensacola News Journal mentions that civic center shelter as being one of three filled to capacity. (There are about 7k people in county shelters, the story says.)

Pensacola Civic Center- it's a low lying area so the parking lot is probably flooded. They were moving people off ground level earlier today in case water intrudes there. They've also had power problems- looks like most of the transformers in Pcola have exploded so they've had to futz with on-site generators a bit.

They're relatively minor problems at this stage of the game. WEAR's city camera goes right over the civic center. If there were major problems there, they'd be reporting it.

The civic center is very well built in a style similiar to the superdome in that it is built high over the ground. On the other hand the parking lot is in a serious flood zone and all those people there will not have cars to go out to tomorrow. They will be alive though.
