This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Do hurricanes attract or repel each other

#1 Postby Robert » Thu Sep 16, 2004 3:11 pm

Just wondering, if Ivan does stall in the Western NC/ Tenn/ SC area, would that attract Jeanne toward that area, repel her from that area (push her someplace else) or have no influance at all on her?

I'm an amateur, but I'll try explaining it the way I understand it...

A hurricane is a low pressure system. You hear people talk about high pressure ridges "holding" storms along a certain track. A storm will follow the path of least resistance - lowest pressure. So if a hurricane has just gone through and another one is near, it will tend to gravitate towards the area of lowest pressure - where the other hurricane is.
