Atlanta flooding

As much as I carp about TWC, and I know other post carp on their focus on Atlanta, I miss being able to see what Ivan is doing to us. The wind and the rain have been incredible for this area. My rain gauge is showing 5+ inches since noon. My employeer, a certain soft drink maker based here closed the offices at 3 so every one could get home to be with their family. Power out since 3, many of the rivers and creeks are already flooding. Anyone from the area will have already guessed that Peachtree
Battle and Nancy Creek have already flooded, and we are only in the first day of rain.

I just want the power on so I can track the next two. I have to conserve the battery on the laptop.

I get the newscasts from Fox 5 WAGA down here. Right when the 5pm newscast started, a tremondous squall was just parked over Downtown Atlanta. What a mess.

From about 5:30PM to 8:30PM we got nearly 6 inches of rain in Gwinnett county. There was one intense band that during that time that nearly sent me running for the basement. Power went off at 6PM and was back on by 7PM. Amazing considering the beating we were taking at the time. Since then power has been going off about every 15 minutes. I stood outside for a while when the rain stopped briefly and noticed lots of blue flashes and arcs around the horizon. The wind right now is fierce and extremely gusty. Several pieces of aluminum were ripped off my house around the east roofline. Had to run around the yard during the deluge trying to catch them all! Well, better submit this as power is flickering. Take care everyone!

I live in Roswell and we have had some strong gusts from time to time. A large tree went down across Old Roswell Road. Pleny of rain also.

I live a stones throw from Sope Creek and it's up more than I have ever seen it! My vegetable garden is under about 5-6 feet of water and the water is still rising. Thank Goodness I am in the 500 year flood plain. The lower part of my property is in the 100 year flood plain.

To add I am an artist and rent a cottage from a fellow that is directly on Sope Creek. This is the first time I have ever seen his property this flooded. Being close to the creek he has built a sea wall around the house. Every hour or so I walk over to his house to see if his wall is still keeping him and his family high and dry. I hope it works. That house has been there since the late 70s early 80s and this is a first for this sea wall.

The bridge that crosses over Sope Creek is about a foot and half from being completely under the water.

I have lived in this area off and on since 1972 and I have never seen the flooding this bad!

Just thought that you would like to hear about a creek that you hear TWC talk about from time to time. Up by me Sope Creek is usually a nice trickle, but after a rain, Watch Out!

No I haven't. Probably has no power. As long as the person isn't in a flood prone area, they are likely OK.

Thanks for the notes. Wolfpack look me up in the directory. I live about 1/2 mile from Peachtree Battle. I have lived here for 40 years and never seen flooding like this. The Creek is covering US 41 (famous from the Alman Brothers song) and is raging like a river. Power out and down to 15 % on battery on laptop. Like an idiot I put the family in the car and drove around to explore. 10 minutes of turning around because trees were down and roads were flooded was enough to remind me I was an idiot. Still, how often do you see this?

As to the other posts. Heard from radio that wost was south and west of city, so Decatur should be OK, but the trees are too old there. I would worry more about that.

Heard from parents in Sandy Springs that they have power but that hundreds of thousands in the metro area do not.

Tree downing is not as bad for this one as Opal, but the rain is worse.

Gotta conserve batteries. Hope TWC is good tonight. I miss it, but not as much as my DSL!

It isn't raing now but we are having a gust or two of wind and every once in a while there is that green lightening that we usaully have during ice storms here! (transformers popping around here)

Just got back from another stroll and it was pretty windy, the waters are getting a bit lower but the wind was kind of scaring me concidering I was walking under trees everywhere and the majority of them are submerged in water.

There are a lot of school closing and a lot of cancelled football games for tomorrow night. Cobb schools are remaining open, so far, all the counties are closed around us though for one reason or another.

Thank goodness the rain has slacked off a bit.

The Low that was once known as Ivan is now moving about thirty-five miles NW of Marietta, GA through a town named Rome. Dalton will probably be in that soon but there really will not be much left to him when his old eye comes through! I am sure that Dalton is ok, have some family up that way and haven't heard otherwise! And Ivan moves along on out of here!

any word on the Blue Ridge area?

No word on the blue ridge area, but the winds picked up again about 30 minutes ago. Power is out all around me here on the NNE side of the permimeter (Norcross). My power is still on fortunately, but it was off for about two hours earlier tonight. I was out at Willie McGee's on Spalding(for those that know the area) when they lost power about 12:30. Won my pool game by the glow of emergency lights though!

Still pretty windy out. Gusting to around 30 or so by my estimate.

Also, the Chattahochee (sp?) is up considerably. I drove across it on Holcomb Bridge Rd. tonight and it appears to be up to 4-5 feet under the bridge. That's pretty high for it.
