Dauphin Island damage reports?
Any word on how Dauphin Island fared in the storm? I've not heard a word or seen a single bit of video of its condition post-Ivan.

All of the roads on Dauphin Island are completely covered with sand and are not passable.
There are hundreds of trees snapped like twigs and lying down.
Homes were damaged.
I read somewhere that the D.I.P. was damaged too, but not like Frederic.
It's bad, but not nearly as bad as Gulf Shores.
Gulf Shores will NEVER ever be the same again.
It looks like a bomb went off....or make that several bombs.

It sounds like the west end of the island is a mess.

Actually there are some roads passable on DI. The west end - past the "S" streets are under several feet of sand and not passable.
Power lines, for the most part, remained standing.
There's no power though. Many homes (again, on the west end) were destroyed and others severly damaged.
But people have gotten over the causeway.
Many injured and dying pelicans and seagulls along the causeway.

Of course I haven't seen it for myself.
Yeah.. neither have I. The above link to Arkansas Fats BBS has been an excellent source of information, as they have posting from people who have gotten onto the island.

The news of the wounded gulls and pelicans is the saddest thing I have heard in all of the post-Ivan coverage. The animals always suffer so in these catastrophes. I had hoped that Mother Nature gave the birds some instinct to warn them of an approaching hurricane, so that they could get out of harm's way. But maybe that isn't the case. Alabama is not a place where animal well-being is a priority, so I doubt these poor birds will get any help.

Unbelievable. The saddest thing? Sadder than my neighbor, who has 17MO triplets, who may lose his job because he has accounts in the area that will flounder? Sadder than the child who died because his parents were too stupid to leave a mobile home? Sadder than the homeless, injured and dead? I love animals, but I'll never understand those that could do so much for mankind if they cared about people half as much as they care about animals.

My family is all in Fairhope, just north of Gulf Shores; I grew up in Alabama. Unfortunately, the good people of that area are probably more concerned right now with helping each other find food, dry clothing, ice, and opening their homes to potential strangers who have no place to go. Although they may be concerned about the wild life (and they usually are very well aware of environmental issues in that are), priority needs come first. You have obviously NEVER had to survive following a major hurricane.

Let's give GuffMorlix the benefit of the doubt and assume that he/she cares equally about the health and welfare of the humans. Sometimes the animal stories can get to all of us.
And hopefully the normal wildlife and pet emergency groups will be stepping up to the plate ASAP to work along with the Red Cross, FEMA etc. No doubt that all have suffered greatly from these many hurricanes.

I agree Terry. I think everyone is understandably concerned about the welfare of the people that have been through Ivan...how could you not be? But, many times in these situations, animals ARE overlooked, yet they're victims too. Yes, obviously, human nature is to satify your basic needs first (food, water, shelter, etc), but there's nothing wrong with being concerned for our animals out there either....

Damage to Dauphin Island is great but nothing in comparison to Frederic, simply because the storm moved just east of the island. Boats in the marina have been thrown onshore, some piled together like trash piles, many sunk. Fort Gaines has been flooded by storm surge, trees down all over the island, significant storm surge crossed the island. Here is a link to our local news... http://www.wkrg.com/
Power is spotty in Mobile, Alabama Power stating power in most areas will be restored no later than Sept. 28
