My sister lives right near Tybee Island on Wilmington Island so I hope it doesn't go there, even though she tells me Savannah rarely gets hit. I can see why looking at a map. It's really well protected, tucked under the SC coast there. Does anyone know, when was the last time a hurricane hit Savannah?

I've got no experience either other than with Charley and Frances. But I got it right with Ivan, voting for AL (sorry AL and points east), so I'm going with my gut again and voting the Carolinas. My HOPE is fish, tho.

Thanks! I guess she's not as safe as she thinks, then. Last time Kissimmee/Orlando got clobbered was what, 1964? So statistically, then, Savannah is moving up the hit list...not that I'd ever expect a hurricane to respond to statistics.

And the last time New Orleans had a direct hit was Betsy in 1965. It has had lots of close calls but rarely gets hit. The storms almost always curves to the east before getting hit.

Actually, Betsy did not make a direct hit on New Orleans.

Well, she went in at Grand Isle, LA. That is the almost the closest point you can get to New Orleans for a direct hit. Besides going up the mouth of the river. New Orleans is not exactly on the coast. They did get 105 sustained winds roar through the city. I was not born for Betsy. But, my mom and dad went through it. My mom in Thibodaux and my dad in Cut Off which are both below New Orleans. They were both in the eyewall and got winds in the 150 mph range.

She went in just west of New Orleans. I was five when Betsy came through, lived in up-town New Orleans. We were on the east side of the storm, which is why we got the storm surge. Betsy is the reason I am terrified of hurricanes.

Right Sunny, Betsy actually came in at Grand Isle and took a track roughly over Bayou Lafourche all then NNW btween Alexandria and the Mississippi River before turning NE over the Ark/Ms Delta region.

Both New Orleans and Baton Rouge were in the right front quadrant of a very large, powerful and fast-moving (above 20 mph) storm.
