Alot of the damage up here in North East Fl I don't think was due to the actually wind speed. Don't get me wrong, we took some good gusts up here toward 60 mph or so. Alot of the damage was caused by toranadic activity and also due the duration of the winds. After watching the demise of my tree and others around the neighborhood, they just couldn't stand up to 24 to 36 hrs of constant 30mph winds with gusts routinely over 40 - 50 mph. The cyclic stress on the older oaks was just too much combined with enough rain to loosen up the soil, and you have a recipe for disaster. There is alot of old growth trees in this city. I fear a direct hit because the amount of tree damage here in Jax would be immense.

Another factor when we get hit again:

There are way too many houses built in this area between 1950 and now 1995 that are built with weaker codes. I live in a new house with better codes, even has a reinforced garage door wind bar.

That was part of the issue with SW Florida and Charley. A lot of houses were built to older codes.
