To respond to a few previous indignant posters:
1. I have survived the aftermath of a major hurricane: Frederic, 1979. No power for nearly a month, around 25 trees on the roof of my home, a pair of destroyed vehicles, a destroyed boat and every family photo we possessed ruined.
2. I am from Alabama. It's a poor state that struggles to provide for the human children who live there, and its animal welfare laws are notoriously weak.

Of course the loss of human life from Ivan is tragic. But I find the animal suffering particularly wrenching because it largely goes unnoticed. Just one major news organization (NY Times) has mentioned the injured and dying wildlife in the storm's wake. Jim Cantore won't do a live stand-up in front of their carcasses, because they're just animals.

The Humane Society is accepting donations for its Disaster Relief Fund to benefit pets misplaced by the storm. Go here for info:

I don't know if any groups are working to help the wildlife.

pittiful... i sent you a private message and you drag
it out on the board like this...

as per your statement... you are more concered
about the battered birds than you are about the
lost lives.... or you misspoke... one or the others.

here is your quote "The news of the wounded gulls and pelicans is the saddest thing I have heard in all of the post-Ivan coverage."

and i said... "um... lives were lost"

The Mobile Register reported either today or yesterday that part of the DI bridge may have been washed out. Is that true?

I am from Alabama and I have to say that Alabama is like every other state in the US , we have people who love animals, people who hate animals and people who fill the spectrum between the two extremes.

I believe animal welfare laws are written to prevent cruelty to animals, the people of Alabama did not cause the death of these birds, Ivan was an act of God.

Animal welfare laws are a standard measure of a state's commitment to the well-being of all beasts.

I don't think they're oblivious to helping animals as they can.

If this is the way you feel about Alabama please stay in New Mexico, and keep you bleeding heart comments there also. we are in a tragedy and don't need your hostile comments about our great state.
