2 Reported Killed in NE MD
Just caught a short breaking news update that 2 women were killed in Cecil County, MD when a tree fell on their home last night. When we went to bed, there were several tornado warnings up in MD but none close to us. My daughter, who wants to be a meteorologist and is on here more than I, assured me she would come wake me if it seemed anything was getting close to us. I had a severe thunderstorm warning e-mail when I got up that was issued around 4:15 AM. Does anybody else know anything?

Hi Becka. I live just down the road in southeast Baltimore County. We didn't get much here except for some heavy rain and lightning late late last night into early this morning. Nothing was severe here.
It wouldn't surprise me if there were a few trees down in the Cecil County area possible due to the rain and gusty wind combination. If the ground was still wet, that may have contributed to even more downed trees. I was noticing some nasty storms rolling near there at around 4:15 AM this morning.
I glanced at the severe weather reports and it shows the tornado threat being more pronounced to our west. 64 tornadoes were reported yesterday. This was one heck of a tornado outbreak west of Washington.
As a matter of fact, meteorologists at the National Weather Service Forecast Office were just within a mile of 2 tornadoes in Sterling, VA. There were actually 2 tornadoes on the ground outside Washington DC near Dulles. NWS officials were actually sighting these tornadoes, all from the same apparent supercell thunderstorm. This same supercell storm produced 2 tornadoes near Fredrick, MD yesterday likewise.
One of the worse storms actually occurred yesterday on I 81 south of Martinsburg where a tornado flipped cars and caused damage to buildings and trees. Luckily no one was killed in that even though there were 4 injuries. But this is one of the worse tornado outbreaks I've tracked here in the Mid Atlantic in the 12 years I've been hooked on weather. La Plata back on April 28, 2002 was probably the worse single tornado that I ever tracked though. On this date there was a funnel cloud just south of Baltimore near the Key Bridge that I tracked as a visual and on doppler radar too. There was alot of confirmation of this funnel cloud over the Patapsco River. It proves that even one tornado is bad enough.
But in any rate I'm glad you and your daughter are safe Becka. That's the most important thing. I'm sorry for those who were hurt or killed in this. That's something that even a weather fanatic like myself doesn't like to hear. But we're doing well here in southeast Baltimore County this morning. It's a bit wet with a northwest wind at 15-25 mph. But no severe weather is in the forecast today. In fact high pressure will build in from the northwest and by Sunday and the next few days, enjoy the weather.

Thanks, Jim. I just heard it was a tree on a mobile home killing an 80 something mother and 60 something daughter in Colora which is about 5 miles from here-close to Rising Sun.
On another note, my husband just finished his FEMA disaster debris cleanup class and certification and is hoping maybe he'll be called to respond to Florida.

That was probably wind damage that caused that damage last night. Checking on the data I got, I noticed a broken line of showers and storms with a possible severe cell near the mouth of the Susquehanna and Rising Sun vicinity after 4 AM this morning. Glancing at the radar some more, I noticed some of this line tried to bow out into a backward U shape. As a result of that bowing segment, my assumption is it was wind that caused that damage in the Rising Sun area.
I wish your hubby alot of luck if he goes down to Florida. I hand it off to those folks helping in the disaster clean up. It's gonna take them a long time to clean up not only from Charley and Frances, but Ivan likewise. That damage on Pensacola Beach was absolutely amazing. Some bridges were even wiped out by the power of water including the Esbamia Bridge on interstate 10, which was washed out by the surge and wave action on Esbamia Bay. Remember it's the the waves that destroy, it's the surge that floods. The combination of those two are absolutely devastating to the coast. We learned that lesson one year ago tonight with tropical storm Isabel. Sept 18 and 19, 2003 was a time I'll never forget.

Status near Conowingo Dam
I was glancing at a statement and folks along the Susquehanna may want to keep a close eye on this near Conowingo Dam. Conowingo Dam will certainly have a workout to face over the next couple of days. Further upstream, major flooding is expected in Harrisburg, PA as the Susquehanna rises over it's banks.

Hi Becka. As CERT Coordinator here in Boca Raton, I'd like to learn more about the FEMA disaster debris cleanup class and certification. We work closely with FEMA on many issues. I searched the FEMA site but couldn't find any information on this class.
Could you please post the link to this class or more information about it. Such a class would be really helpful to us. Thanks so much in advance.
