The difference in the damage Ivan caused to the east of the eye versus to the west of the eye seems more dramatic then usual.

Looks like tornado damage. I checked the link, it came from the News-Journal website so it's authentic.

I've been in the Grand Lagoon area at the state park a couple of times. Very low ground, less than 10 feet above sea level.

Since the 2 owners are Floridians I'd advise you to watch blanket statements. Trolls don't last long here....

AMEN. Charley and Francis were bad enough. I really send out all my prayers for the ppl of the Alabama/FL. Panhandle area, and hope they get plenty of help and TLC--they will need it.

Fox News reported a short time ago 8 bodies found in the Grand Lagoon area of Pensacola Beach with many more missing.

Why on earth are people so stupid to ride out a borderline Cat 4 on a freaking barrier island?

Grand Lagoon is on the mainland, probably a good 1/4-1/2 mile in from the barrier islands/outlet to the Gulf. It's nowhere near Pensacola Beach, but fairly close to Perdido Key.

It's just got an extremely low elevation.

Went to Destin today. Holiday Isle is a mess. Significant beach erosion. Beyond that, the damage seems minor- lots of signs down, minor to moderate roof damage. Power is off and on in the city. Don't know how the neighborhoods fared, but at least 2/3rds of the traffic lights were functional. Publix at 98 and Danny Wuerffel is open, as are a growing number of inland restaurants. (Bonefish Grill, China Taste, TGI Friday's, Osaka)

Mail is being delivered in the North Bay area again. Got a $5 Petco store grand opening gift certificate for their Destin location. Wonder how many days this is going to delay that grand opening.

99% of the damage in Bluewater Bay is from trees going down. (not surprising since the area's an old timber plantation) I'm hearing chainsaws from dawn to dusk in my neighborhood. It looks like power is back in most of Bluewater. Hurrah for underground utilities.

Yzerfan I have asked before and have not seen an answer which doesn't mean it wasn't answered. But do you know if the tower at Eglin went over? My mother seems to think it did.

Here's the Mobile Register newspaper website:
http://www.al.com/mobileregister/
They have stories of hurricane damage and clean-up. This particular story is about Perdido Key and Grande Lagoon:

They think the Eglin tower got hit with a tornado or microburst since it's rated for the sort of hurricane force winds it got. It's repairable, and in the short term, they're going to use a temporary tower they just happened to have on hand. Report on Eglin was mostly minor roof damage, and they've got power back on the industrial part of the base.

Bluewater Bay here (outside of Niceville, FL). We had several large limbs down, tons of smaller ones, but NO damage to the house whatsoever. The water did come up about 5-6 feet into the back yard but again, not into the house. We are SO lucky. There are TONS of trees in our neighborhood (Lido Village) that were uprooted, snapped off, etc. But I can't see any substantial home damage on the three streets that make up our section. Our marina is pretty trashed though....

People in Grand Lagoon were told to evacuate. Those that chose to ride out the storm were made to sign waivers.

Just came back from Pensacola with ukweatherworld.co.uk team.

Pensacola Beach is washed up on Gulf Breeze. We were finding street signs over here, plugged them into map software. They were from across the sound. Debris line in the trees shows extensive structural damage; 2 x 12s snapped off, telephone poles and pilings, porches, etc.

Spoke with people who saw fifty foot waves crashing over the penninsula in some places. Perdito area pretty much gone.

Areas down by Ft. Walton gone as well. One place was nothing but slab foundations.

Shoreline south of Gulf Breeze trashed. Homes on pilings did ok 3rd floor up. Garages below washed out (as they were designed to do) and contents now in the swamp behind them. HAZMAT and sheen everywhere. Surge almost came up to city hall.

Media, etc not being allowed in yet as they are still recovering bodies.

This was a very serious surge. I'm a coast guardsman and I've never seen anything like it. The Navy wave forecast was spot on. A lot of people who didn't evacuate paid for it.

Really quite unbelievable unless you see it.
