being a former Boyscout, Im quite used to living without power. spent many a summer camp with only lanterns and flashlights and matches. Its spiritually fullfulling and refreshing in a way because it puts you closer to natures original state. In that respect I rather like the outdoors and camping. I think more people should experience it seriously, because it gives a new perspective and appreciation for the luxuries we have in this wonderful country.

I'm sorry, but post-hurricane chaos is not the same as a fun vacation camping. It's exhausting and miserable.

Completely agree. Yesterday was awful here when our power was out. I can't imagine not having it for a week or two or more. If I was in that situation, I would defintely not be down there right now.

I tried to be really good and tough it out, but I'll be honest by day 10 I was pretty whiny. I have complete empathy for everyone dealing with post-Ivan aftermath.

7 days without A/C post-David was my worse memory. Prior to that (pre 1970), most middle-class residents didn't have A/C anyway, so we didn't miss it as much.

Another native! Seems like there are less and less of us around! I don't really remember David much, but we lived in Broward county then. I don't think it was nearly as bad there as it was for those on the coast north of us. It's funny A/C wasn't what I missed most. It was running water. I can't tell you how many times I turned on a faucet and stared blankly at it when nothing came out.

On a more serious note, should Jeanne decide to intensify and make that turn back toward Florida, that could be the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back". Here in Orlando, people have NOT taken down their plywood that went up before Frances. The threat of Ivan, followed by Jeanne's taunt had everyone jittery. Yesterday, for the first time, there was a perceptible sense of cautious relief. And today, for the first weekend since Charley, the department store I work at was very busy. A number of customers commented that this was the first time in 6 weeks that they didn't have a hurricane to distract them.
If Jeanne (or even Ivan if he decides to pull a miraculous rebirth!) hits Florida later in the week, it would push many over the edge. As some others have posted, people are putting their homes up for sale in my neighborhood and getting out of the state. This hurricane season could wind up having a long-term detrimental economic impact to our state in terms of people-perception.

As a Fl native, I can say the inconvience of not having power after storms didn't seem quite so bad back in "the days" ... We didn't have ac then anyway so, it really only meant more mosquitoes and more mold. The loss of TV wasn't so bad as we only had three channels anyway.. four if you held the aluminum foil on the rabbit ears just right. In addition, clean up wasn't so difficult because we were the only house on this road back then and if a tree fell and it didn't hit your house...well... then a tree fell and stayed right where it was. (made great climbing gyms through the remainder of the season.)

Our plywood is staying UP until Jeanne does whatever she decides to do (she sure looks like she's dying tonight...)

If DH gets his bonus early next year, I have already informed him that proper hurricane shutters are the #1 priority. With us going into a more active hurricane phase of existence in FL, I want proper protection for our house, not just three sliding glass doors covered by plywood.

Why the hell do hurricane shutters, even the cheap ones, cost so damned much? :(

Finally, after more years than I care to count, I finally got my hubby to agree to gradually install real shutters. We live in a villa/condo so plywood isn't an option anyway. I plan to start looking into them soon and we will install ourselves as time permits. Fortunately, he is quite handy and also happens to work at Home Depot. I'm the organizer and gofer. We make a decent team once we get started-the hard part in getting him off the computer or out of his lounge chair. LOL
