The bridge carrying Interstate 10 over Escambia Bay is wiped
I'm glad they found the driver's body. It's too bad he couldn't have been found alive. I take it the bridge was not barricaded. I just can't imagine why the driver would try and cross the bridge during a hurricane. My thoughts and prayers to the driver and his family. This photo was taken just as the hurricane passed. Can't imagine what it would have looked like during the worst part of the storm!!

Hurricane Ivan slammed into the U.S. Gulf Coast early Thursday with devastating winds and pounding waves that ripped homes apart, flooded deep inland and spawned tornadoes that killed at least eight people. Hi GulfHills!!! I was wondering why they didn't close it down also. All the DOT had to do was put some concrete barricades up on both ends. I know they can't sit police out there during a hurricane, but the barricades would have helped give a hint. Weatherman911

I'm also surprised that no one closed the I-10 bridge. Nearly every other bridge along the Panhandle has a point at which they shut it all down. It's usually a wind speed measurement because they feel like vehicles can't go over the Intercoastal 'hump' of the bridge safely beyond a certain point. The 331 bridge has very low approaches and shuts down when they're worried about overwash/storm surge in Choctawhatchee Bay.

there was a 27 million contract to repair the westbound lanes of the I-10 bridge awarded this past Friday. They began yesterday. They will have one lane, east and west bound open in 24 days. I cross it everyday. They will then have 90 days to get the eastbound up and running with lots of bonus money if they finish early. If you have to come through in October, you should be OK. School is cancelled for at least 4 weeks, so I don't have to make the trek for awhile.

I am here in the Daytona Beach area. Our bridges close when the winds are 40 mph or greater. So you can't get to the barrier island or leave the barrier island once the bridges have closed. I can't understand why the I-10 bridge was open with the high wind warnings/storm surge warnings they had.

the FDOT will inspect the entire bridge and certify any or all portions of the bridge. The bridges are regularly inspected and tests can be done to ascertain the strength of the current bridge.
If the piles of the failed spans are damaged this will be an interesting for the FDOT. They could offset the alignment and drive new piles (the engineers will get more sleep of this option) or test the remaining damaged piles add addition piles build a new pile cap and everyone sweats it out.
Glad I'm on the east coast of Florida and won't get the call for this one. I'd loose alot of sleep over this one.
