Damage from Ivan 3X worse than Charley, Frances

State and federal officials said the damage caused by Ivan is three to four times worse than what Charley brought to Southwest and Central Florida, or what Frances did to Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast, according to Escambia County Administrator George Tourant.

Category 3 Ivan turned its 130-mph winds, deadly storm surge and tornadoes on apartment complexes and expensive waterfront homes in three states, ripping off roofs, tearing down walls and leaving some residents with open-air living.

Ivan's estimated 30-foot storm surge overwhelmed the bays of the western Panhandle, eviscerated dozens of homes down to their foundations and left others as bare skeletons, ready to crumble in the next stiff breeze. Bridges, the main arteries to the cities are mostly unusable. The Interstate 10 bridge was washed away in two places, sections of it moved by Ivan as if were built with a child's blocks.
