Ivan makes MAJOR HISTORY!
In the US, the greatest recorded storm surge was generated by Hurricane Camille, which produced a storm surge in excess of 25 feet (7.6 m).

We always talked about how a category 4 could cause 30ft storm surge in the panhandle.... well... Ivan created a 30 foot storm surge! That makes it the highest surge in the US... EVER RECORDED!
Hurricane History in USA

I shudder to think what if this thing had hit as an upper 4/5...
Thankfully it weakened (a little) but not enough to avert major disaster.

I made a point in another thread the other day about this storm surge, which I had estimated to be 17-20 feet from the descriptions that it was about "two stories" high. Remember this storm before it weakened somewhat had been a Cat 5 for a good deal of its lifespan, and my point was that it might have been carrying Cat 4/5 surge with it, although it had cat 3/4 winds and pressure.
Does that have to do with the shape of the Florida panhandle?

The artical says the surge was 'Estimated". Lets wait and see what the "offical" word is after all the surveys are done. A quote from the artical:
Others in the Grande Lagoon neighborhood outside Pensacola may not have been so fortunate after they tried to flee a storm surge estimated as high as 30 feet in the waterfront areas southwest of the city

In terms of surge on the N Gulf Coast, topography and angle of approach play a HUGE role. We've had tropical storms here that caused 7-9 foot surges, and hurricanes that were only 3-5. Certainly, wind speed is the primary cause in the first place, but the shallower waters also contribute greatly. The sloaping bottom just off-shore of GS and Pensacola, and the very shallow waters in the Bay, had to contribute significantly to create this great of a surge. But it was big for sure - imagine the force it takes to move steel-reinforced, concrete roadbeds!!

Agree with Derek...surge was not 30 feet. People are just seeing the wave damage at the beach in the higher levels of the condos. People used to always say Camille had 30 feet too. Officially the surge was 25.7...although I have heard Harrison EMA hint at bayous all throughout Hancock county getting up to 30, this isnt official. The Bayou issue is not a stranger to me either, as I live on one. The surge on my Bayou with George approached 15 feet. But the official highest surge for Georges was around 12.

I don't think I can buy into a 30 foot surge, but I'm reasonably sure from what damage I've seen on TV, and reports of people who witnessed the surge that it was at least 20 feet, and perhaps a little higher... I also think that even though the winds weakened to Cat 3, Ivan maintained at Cat 5 storm surge with it....
but I guess it really doesn't matter what the surge was, if you have large waves on top of the surge combined together that are reaching the 30 feet level.... and your house is only 20 feet above sea level... you're still going to get your house destroyed...

as I watch the early morning news out of Mobile who are providing continuing updates on storm damage some guy just report that there was a 40 wall of water that destroy a neighborhood, they were interviewing all the homeless victims from the area.....
maybe a 20 foot surge and 20 foot waves... maybe he was embellishing his story somewhat.... I have not heard ANY official report as to what the max storm surge was with Ivan....

Why are we arguing about how large Ivan's surge was?
We know it was large, and we know it was tragic, and we know people lost lives and homes and businesses.
