Weather Modification

#1 Postby Duffy » Sun Sep 19, 2004 1:28 pm

On one of the Networks last night, they were talking about Weather Modification. In other words using Technology to deflect storms to other places or even destroy them altogether.
Apparrently in 1969, from what they said, they tried that with Hurricane Debbie which came after Camille. They did something to the Storm and the Winds decreased by 25%. At the time they did this, apparrently Debbie was a Cat 3 'Cane. But the next day the Winds increased again back up to Cat 3 strength.
I have to say right here and now, while i competely feel for the folks in Florida who've suffered through Bonnie, Charley, Frances and Ivan, the idea of modifying the weather bothers me a great deal. If we start playing around with the Weather and deciding whom will get what, where and when, are we not playing God? And what if we tried something like that and deflected the storm to another location and there were massive casualties? like say in Mexico or something? do you know how much they would hate us?
I feel that everything happens for a reason and God is the Creator and he should determine what happens with these storms not us. When we start doing things like that, we're starting to assume his role i think.
Besides as the Weather enthusiasts that we are, it wouldn't be fun anymore to predict the weather or how strong a storm would get. There would be no more classic hurricanes or Nor' Easters anymore. I realize these storms have caused alot of misery and destruction but that is what makes them the legends they are. I am from New England and they still talk about the infamous Blizzard of '78. That is what legends are made of, and that is what being a Weather Geek is all about. Not trying to control it or try to manipulate it somehow.
Well thats just my feeling on it, i think Weather Modifcation would be totally unethical and trying to play God.
God Bless

opinion:

Humans are insignificant when it comes to the scale of geologic process....
It's quite arrogant (and ignorant) to believe that the human race really means a lot to geologic history.

Let me close this opinion with:
morsels of thought....
If humans can ever gain the power to alter hurricanes, I suspect that we will destroy our environment...but the earth will live as long as the earth lives...
Mars may have been a habitable planet at one point in geologic history.

Leaning towards not favoring it. Athough need more info about the ramifications. I just wonder what would happen if we could stop adverse weather. What would the earth be like then???
